Hi @Hima565, Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It looks like your HP Smart Tank 585 is cropping the 4x6 photo prints by about 3mm on all sides, while A4 and 5x7 prints are fine. Based on your issue, here are some things to check:
Possible Causes & Solutions:
Borderless Printing Settings:
- Ensure "Borderless Printing" is enabled in the printer settings.
- In Windows, go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers > Right-click on your printer > Printing Preferences and look for an option like "Borderless Printing" or "Fit to Page".
Paper Size Settings in Software:
- When printing from Photoshop, Windows Photo Viewer, or any software, make sure the selected paper size matches exactly 4x6 inches (102x152mm).
- Also, verify scaling options (should be set to "Actual Size" or "100%" instead of "Fit to Page").
Paper Alignment in Tray:
- Check if the 4x6 paper is properly aligned inside the printer tray.
- Adjust the paper guides in the tray to ensure the printer feeds the paper correctly.
Printer Firmware & Driver Update:
- Go to HP Support website and check if there's a firmware update available for your printer.
- Reinstall the latest drivers from HP's website.
Print Margins Adjustment:
- Some HP printers add automatic margins by default. Try setting custom margins to 0mm (if possible) in the print settings.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

@Hima565, Thank you for your response.
No problem, and I hope your exams went well! Since the issue persists after trying the previous steps, let's try some advanced troubleshooting to resolve the cropping problem on 4x6 prints.
Use HP Photo Printing Software
Instead of printing through regular apps, try HP Smart or HP Photo Creations (if available). These apps are optimized for HP printers and may handle 4x6 printing better.
- Open HP Smart and go to Print Photos.
- Select your 4x6 image.
- Choose Borderless Printing and check if there’s an option to disable auto-cropping.
- Print and see if the issue is resolved.
Adjust "Paper Source" in Printer Settings
- In Printing Preferences, go to Paper/Quality settings.
- Change Paper Source to Photo Tray or Main Tray, depending on where you load the 4x6 paper.
- Ensure Paper Type is set to HP Photo Paper (or glossy, if applicable).
Change "Printable Area" Setting
Some HP printers allow you to modify the printable area.
- Open Printer Preferences.
- Look for an option like “Advanced” > “Printable Area”.
- Set it to Maximum or Borderless.
Test With a Different Image File Format
- If you’re printing a JPEG, try converting it to PNG or TIFF before printing.
- Some image formats have embedded margins that could be affecting print size.
Perform a Semi-Full Reset on the Printer
If software settings don't work, try a semi-full reset to reset the printer firmware and settings:
- Turn off the printer.
- Unplug the power cord for 2-3 minutes.
- Reconnect the power cord and turn it on.
- Try printing a 4x6 test image again.
Try Printing via USB Instead of Wi-Fi
Sometimes, printing over Wi-Fi can cause scaling issues. Try connecting via USB cable and printing directly.
I hope this helps!

@Hima565, Thanks for the update! It looks like the issue is related to how the printer handles different paper types. Here’s what I suggest to get the correct print size while maintaining high photo quality:
Change Scaling to "Actual Size" or "Custom"
- Right now, your Scaling is set to "Shrink to fit".
- Try changing it to "Actual Size" or manually setting a Custom Scale (100%).
Steps:
- Open Print Settings.
- Under Scaling, select "Actual Size" instead of "Shrink to Fit".
- If there's no "Actual Size" option, set Custom Scale = 100%.
- Print and check if the size issue is fixed.
Use "HP Photo Paper" Instead of "Glossy Paper"
- If you're using third-party glossy photo paper, the printer might be misinterpreting the paper thickness.
- Try selecting "HP Photo Papers" instead of generic "Glossy Paper".
Manually Set Print Margins (If Available)
- If borderless printing expands the image too much, check if there's a Margin or Expansion setting in the Advanced Options.
- If possible, reduce image expansion to prevent cropping.
Print Using a Different Software
If the issue continues, try printing from another app like: ✅ HP Smart
✅ Microsoft Photos
✅ Adobe Photoshop or IrfanView (For more control)
These apps sometimes handle paper types and scaling better than the default print dialog.
Print in "Plain Paper" Mode for Glossy Paper (As a Workaround)
Since printing in Plain Paper mode gives the correct size, but lower quality, you can:
- Set Paper Type = Plain Paper even when using Glossy.
- Increase Print Quality to Best or Maximum.
- See if the print quality improves.
I hope this helps!
