I bought new HP 61 printer cartridges at Walmart - it says they are made in Malaysia and the new printer cartridges says they are not compatible with my printer.  So strange.  I tried unplugging my printer and restarting it and it still says the same thing.  I can't get the cartridges to work.

@Cheri4,

Thank you for posting your query on HP Support Community,

Are you using the cartridge from the same country you purchased this printer?

Let's try these steps here:

Let's start off by updating the printer firmware. If your printer connected wirelessly, make sure to temporary connect the device with USB and then follow the link to install the latest firmware update on your printer from our HP support website. Alternatively you can also try to update the printer firmware directly from the printer control panel.

For more details on how to update, please use this link: HP Printers - Updating or Upgrading Printer Firmware

If the issue persists, I would suggest here is to do a hard reset on the printer and make sure that the printer is connected directly to the wall outlet and not to the surge protector.

Remove all the ink cartridges and then try to perform a hard reset on the printer.

With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and also unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

Remove USB cable, if present.

Wait for 2-3 minutes, press and hold the power button on your printer for about 30 seconds to remove any additional charge.

Now plug back the power cable straight to a wall outlet without any surge protector or an extension cord and then plug back the power cord to the printer.

Turn on the printer and wait till warm-up period finishes and the printer is idle.

Now insert the ink cartridges and then try to print a test page and check if it works.

Regarding the cartridges, I bought them from Walmart in Utah and the box says HP 61 cartridges.  The cartridges say made in Malaysia, but again I purchased them from Walmart in Utah.

I did a hard reset on my printer and the printer still says the cartridges are not compatible.  I tried to update the firmware from my printer as it is wireless, but there is not an update in the menu on the printer.  I do not have a USB cord to connect my printer to my computer as everything is wireless.  So I would need to go into town to purchase a USB cord which is 45 minutes away.

At this point I am very frustrated because I can't print. I am going to go back to Walmart and take the cartridges back and try a new pair of cartridges.

Thank you Jeet for helping.  I took the cartridges back to Walmart and exchanged them.  The new cartridges are working thank goodness.  I have never run across any HP cartridges that did not work.  Very strange that this would happen.  I'm glad the new cartridges are working.  Thank you for your help.
