@LLOYD6, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding 502 Bad Gateway Alert on HP Smart!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

The error you are facing, "502 Bad Gateway" with the message "Certificate verify failed: self signed certificate," indicates that there might be a problem verifying the security certificate of the printer when attempting the Align Printer function. Here are some steps you can take to resolve this issue:

Accept the Security Warning: When prompted with the message that the connection is not private, accepting this warning is necessary to continue to your printer settings. Make sure you proceed past this warning.

Check Network Settings: Ensure that your network settings are correctly configured. Sometimes, a network misconfiguration can lead to such errors.

Add the Certificate on Trusted Root Certificate Authorities: If you encounter a self-signed certificate issue, you may need to manually add the printer's certificate to the trusted root certificate authorities on your computer.

Here are the steps to manually handle certificates using the Embedded Web Server (EWS) of the printer:

Viewing and Managing Certificates Using EWS

View Details of a Certificate:

  • Open the Embedded Web Server (EWS) on your printer by entering the printer's IP address in a web browser.
  • Navigate to the Security tab.
  • Click Certificate Management.
  • Select a certificate from the Certificates area.
  • Click View Details.

Removing a Certificate:

  • Go to the Security tab.
  • Click Certificate Management.
  • Select a certificate from the Certificates area.
  • Click Remove.
  • Confirm the removal operation in the warning dialog box that displays.

Exporting a Certificate:

  • Go to the Security tab.
  • Click Certificate Management.
  • Select a certificate from the Certificates area.
  • Click Export....

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!

Thanks Zoey.  I'm never getting an alert in order to bypass the Bad Gateway.  In any case, I'm getting these notifications only when trying to open "Alignment & Maintenance".  I clicked on "Print Quality Tools", and I get an option for alignment, which works, so I'm good to go.  Thanks again
