Envy 5530
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

Printer 5530 was working fine. Black cartridge ran out of ink. Replaced cartridge- no printing of black, only color.  Thought the replacement might be a dud. Put another new one in (both HP brand, out of the box). Still no black printing. Did many cleaning attempts via screen and from computer attached with USB. Nothing. It WILL print a blackish color when I took black cartridge out- using the tri color composite cartridge.  Removed cartridge, shut printer off, turned back on, left overnight, unplugged, ran Scan Doctor.  Still  no black printing.

Why would it suddenly not work afte replacing that one cartridge????

Hi @Weaver1953

Are you getting any error messages e.g. cartridge missing? Try cleaning the little electrical contact pads on the back of the ink cartridge and also have a look at where they sit into the printer to make sure nothing got damaged when you replaced the empty cartridge. Sometimes if they are not aligned properly it can cause a rejection error.

However, if the printer accepts the cartridge and prints but the black ink is just missing this suggests a problem with the cartridge and not the printer. If this is the case I would suggest bringing the cartridges back to where you purchased them or you could try calling phone support, you may be entitled to replacement cartridges. @Weaver1953,

Welcome to the HP Community 🙂

I read your post about how the black ink will no longer print out after changing the ink cartridges. I saw that you have tried two new cartridges, and the results are the same, with no black printing out. I would personally think that there could be an internal printhead issue, which is why the cartridges are all not working.

Please try the steps from this link, and if the issue continues, contact HP directly to see about a replacement printer order: Color or Black Ink Not Printing

If you have any troubles with the steps, let me know and I will do my best to help.

Thank you so much! This worked- I tried first cleaning the back of the cartridge contact pads with a litle alchohol, and then dried it off- no luck. I then cleaned the contacts of the printhead where the cartridge contacts connect with a wee bit of alcohol on a Qtip, and that worked!  Saved me from buying a new printhead (at more than half the price of a new printer, or a new printer and time setting up etc.  WHEW! :generic:

Thanks for the recommendation. I had tried two more NEW cartridges too- but it was cleaning the contact pad on the printhead that seemed to do the trick.

Thank you so much for this suggestion  It worked for me too!  I had got through all of the suggested troubleshooting and was planning to by a new printer.  No need - problem solved!

If the contacts needed cleaning should not a message " black cartridge not present " been displayed

Hi, Now realize I should contact you not poster. How do I find contact points on ink cartridge and on printer? Sure want to think that will work for me too.

Hi @Ahnt_Ann

The contact pads on the cartridge are on the gold flex strip on the back.

The contact pads inside the printer are visible if you remove the cartridges.

Contact pads print head.jpgWipe contact pads with a slightly damp cloth (make sure printer is powered off when you do this).

Hope this helps!
