Hello WineGuy,
It accommodates 5x7 (see media sizes). Also, note it accommodates "Custom" Paper Size (see ##), so you should be able to place stock of any dimension and slide the guides in from the side and it should work.
Your problem could be that the print settings need to match in a couple of spots.
So, in the Print Dialog of the program from which you are printing (say MS Word) click on paper/quality at the top, set the Paper Source to Main Tray, Set Media Type (**), and click on Advanced and set the Paper Size to 5x7. (or set to Custom if no 5 x 7)
Click OK and OK to back out to the Print Dialog where if you click on that OK it will print. So try a print job. Results?
Use plain paper cut to 5 x 7 for experimenting. Load at least 5 sheets. Type 1 word to save ink.
** I don't have a 6978 so can't advise on Media Type, hopefully it specifies Cardstock. If not use something like Presentation Paper, or experiment.

Load the narrow side of the cards first into the paper tray. Pull the sliding guides in from the sides. Load a minimum number of cards (say 5), but don't exceed the markings for maximum.
Look at the User Guide (next link). Read Loading Paper (starts Page 13) especially Card Stock on Page 15 of User Guide where it says:
Ensure that the stack of paper is aligned with the appropriate paper size lines on the bottom of the input tray, and does not exceed the stack height marking on the side of the tray.
Page 30 of User Guide:
Paper loading tips For more information, also see Load paper. — Ensure the paper is loaded in the input tray properly, and set the correct media size and media type. Upon loading paper in input tray, you will be prompted to set the media size and media type. — Load a stack of paper (not just one page). All the paper in the stack should be of the same size and type to avoid a paper jam. — Load paper with the print-side down. — Ensure that paper loaded in the input tray lays flat and the edges are not bent or torn.

I am not an HP employee; just searching for helpful answers for queries on the forum.
A reply is greatly appreciated, if suggestions help or not, as the multitude of volunteers on the forums respond to lots of queries, which requires a great deal of time. Good luck.
