I cannot get my HP7740 to print the Avery 5202 label. It captures the form from the tray, feeds it and pushes it out properly....but only prints across the very top of the form regardless which label position I wanted it to print upon (single label tab or the whole document of 7 tabs).  Yes, I've confirmed the print settings specify a 4x6 page and I've tried placing single and multiple labels in the feeder tray.   I've even tried taping the label to a 8.5x11 sheet, same issue occurs.

Is this a hardware issue?

The following assumes you have installed the Full Feature Software (full driver for the printer).

Primary Answer:

Set Paper type as Brochure matte or other thick paper option.

Printer Specifications for HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 Wide Format All-in-One Printer (G5J38A)

Lots and lots of details for the obsessed label maker...

Template available at Avery
https://www.avery.com/templates/5202

If you do not have Acrobat Pro that supports editing, download instead the Word document format template.

This is essentially the same label as the Avery 5200 (same size / number of individual labels per sheet).

The paper type / Media setting might need to be adjusted to accommodate the slightly thicker label paper.

Basics

Open the downloaded / saved template in Word

 Set to "Allow Editing"

Create your label content

Use Save-As to save the Word document under a new name to preserve the template file

Export the file to PDF format

Open the file in Adobe Reader DC

Click the Print Icon

Set up and Print

Suggestion:  Test Print at Actual Size

Example - Adobe Reader DC > PDF format label Avery 5200 - Print

Avery_5200_Sample_Label_PDF_Print_1Avery_5200_Sample_Label_PDF_Print_1

What else?

NOTE:

Absolutely ignore this section if you don't care to be involved with this level of complexity just to test the output.

Test printing a full size label sheet on plain paper is easy - use Letter (or A4 depending on location).

Test printing a 4x5 inch template is a bit more work (lots of paper cutting, for example).

Alternatively, Try / Consider

Open the label document in Word or open the PDF file

View the content at 100 % (actual size)

Use Snip to grab the image from the document:

Trace the edges of the label as close as possible when snipping your image.

Save the image as a .jpg file.

Open HP Smart for Windows

Select to Print Photos

Select / Open your saved image file to print

Set up to print on Paper Size = Letter (or A4)

Set the Photo Size

4x6 inches

OR

Full Page  (either works for this test)

The file will (likely) print within 1/16 inch of the actual size of the label paper.

General Example - HP Smart > Print snipped photo image file

Avery_5200_Sample_Size100_Print_1Avery_5200_Sample_Size100_Print_1

What else?

If you continue to have horizontal alignment issues (side to side),

Open the .doc template in Word > File > Info > Select to Convert the format

Save under a different name to protect your original file.

Export the document and test / print.

Problem solved...I set paper type to "plain paper thick" and it is working...somewhat. The alignment on the tabs is a bit off, but at least it is printing sufficiently for me to have ink hit a label.

Many thanks!!!!!!

You are welcome.

Paper type (Media) selection fixes many issues  encountered when printing on "label" paper.

The gap between the rollers needs to be larger to accommodate the extra thickness of the sheets.

Happy Printing.

Stay Safe.

Better 2021 for everyone.
