This is the 20190716 firmware installer

Just run it, select the printer then click "send firmware"

Unfortunately, that won't run on a Mac.

I had the same problem. I had to downgrade my firmware to this :

http://ftp.hp.com/pub/networking/software/pfirmware/HP_LaserJet_Pro_M280_M281_Printer_series_2020061...

And there are a few different ways to install new firmware.

Hera are the options :

https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c01711356#WinMethod_Local_FTP_USB

I used the USB method which they called "Method four: Update the firmware at the control panel using a USB connection"

It worked and now I can use my printer. A big warning. If you downgrade your firmware...be sure to cancel any automatic upgrades on your printer control panel. Otherwise it will upgrade again.

Best of luck !

I have the exact same problem with the exact same printer. I am in a perpetual loop that does not keep the printer connected long enough to be able to do anything with the printer control panel. I have attempted basic things like removing the printer and reinstalling it, with no success. Clearly the update that HP sent out caused the issue. it would nice to see them actually fix it. I will try to recommendations provided by others next. Thank you by the way to those of you who took the time to recommend solutions!

Update - I attempted to use the link provided here by another user to download the firmware to the computer, but the printer would not pull out of the 79 System Error loop long enough to get it installed. I then was able to get into the wireless settings during the loop cycle long enough to shut off the wireless connection. Followed what others had said here and removed all ethernet and USB connections to printer. I removed the printer from Windows and removed software. I ran the 44.7.2712 version of the printer software for Color LaserJet Pro MFP M281fdw (https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software13/printers/LJ/M278-281/LJM278-M281_UWWL_4_1_Full_WebPack_44....) and used a different wireless connection from the one the loop cycle was using. It allowed me to get everything set up and working again. Seriously would like the amount I make per hour back from HP for what is clearly an error in their firmware updates. Grr!

Followed the USB method with the 20200612 firmware, and good to go! Thanks!

The 20190716 firmware installer from John 341 worked for me.  Thank you!

Is anyone who has fixed this with the firmware process on a MAC??

There’s a recommended firmware update, but I tried to load the print continued error and reboot at about 80% complete. The firmware seems to finish loading, but I suspect it doesn’t. I this case there is also a consistent “Supply Problem” related to the toner cartridge(s).

I was able to resolve the issue using the file the John341 listed. Fortunately, I also have an old PC that I was able to use to run the program with my printer connected via USB. This corrected the boot-loop issue, but afterward, my mac wouldn't print wirelessly because it didn't have the right drivers. To resolve this issue I had to download "HP Easy Start" for Mac which allowed me to install the correct drivers.

My printer finally works again, but I don't know what I would have done if I didn't have a PC. My advice to "Mac-only" users is to find a friend who is willing to let you borrow their PC for 10 minutes and downgrade the firmware that way.

This worked for me!  Thank you for posting.  I admit, I was a bit afraid to download it.  I ran it even though my printer was stuck in a loop (it says your printer should be on ready).  Afterward, I printed the configuration report.  It didn't want to go though, but I followed the prompts to get to the printer properties and it cleared.  Thank you again!
