I think a lot will depend on whether your printer is in or out of warranty.  Mine is out of warranty.  After going through all the steps and continuing to have the problem HP online forum support had me call telephone support.  I called and, after explaining the problem and the steps I'd taken to try to fix it, they had me print out several pages -- a color copy, a black and white copy, and a web page.  All of them printed just fine.

With that they told me that there was most likely a problem with the printer itself that would require service to fix and they would be happy to talk to me about an upgraded printer.  I'm assuming (but just an assumption) that the cost to repair the printer would likely be close to or greater than the cost of a replacement.

At least for the time being, I've elected to keep the printer turned off; only turning it on when I'm ready to print something.  If your printer is still under warranty you can probably get it fixed or get a new printer.  If, like mine, yours is out of warranty I suspect you're looking at deciding whether to work around the problem or get a new printer.

And I can confirm the exact same behavior in an HP OfficeJet Pro 8710, purchased a week ago, using the cartridges that it shipped with. A single page prints with only the letter G, then printer goes offline.

I can confirm I also have this issue with my 8710 connected to imac..

I have the exact same problem also!  Randomly prints a G.  I t just did it today as I was sitting at the computer.  Normally I just find a blank sheet except for the G in the tray.  Mine is a OfficeJet Pro 8725 from Costco.  None of the solutions suggested here worked.  Can't tell me this isn't a known problem to HP.  It is a systemic isse they have and need to fix.  Also running this off of an iMac running the latest Mojave OS version 10.14.3

Thanks for the reply.  Somewhat ironically, I had already cleaed the cache and cookies for my browser a day or two before I witnessed the "G" printing.  I used the linked supplied to download the firmware.  When I opened it, as I suspected, it was for a 8720.  I know Costco has their own numbers from vendors, but the installer would go forward because it was this was the wrong FW for the unit.  I tried to add manually, but again got the wrong firmware message.  For the record, the current FW is WMP1CN1848AR.  I have seen the print message a few times that it has downloaded new software/firmware and I did install it.  Hopefully that keeps me up to date.  any suggestions? thanks.

For what it's worth, I am seeing the random "G" printing much less often since switching my settings from using USB connection to using wi-fi. But I'm pretty sure it has happened once or twice since the switch.

G sheets printing daily for me. No rhyme or reason.

G is for GGGGGGRRRRRRR

:generic:I think you're right!!  Now I know what the "G" stands for!

I have tried these solutions, but still getting the random sheet printing a single page with only one letter on it, an upper case "G"
