HP OfficeJet Pro 8710
macOS 10.14 Mojave

Purchased 8710 OfficeJet 3 months ago.  Since installation, most pages print normally but every 20th (or so) page has extremely misaligned printing.  If I immediately print the page again with making no changes or adjustments, it prints normally.

1) I have used up the starter cartridges and have genuine HP 952 cartridges installed.  The problem occurs with both.

2) I have aligned the print cartridges & printed a diagnostic page.  All look fine.

3) I have reset the printer (turn on/unplug from printer/unplug from wall/wait 60 seconds/plug into wall/plug into printer)

4) Firmware is up to date.

5) Event log shows 5 events total with two different codes-74740 and 74899.  I don't know what these codes mean or if they are related to the printer misalignment.

6) I have not yet tried to clean the printhead.  The fact that I can immediately reprint the page with no intervention and have it print correctly the second time makes me think that cleaning the printhead won't help.  All this troubleshooting, along with the problem itself,  uses expensive HP ink.

7) I print several pages daily so the printer is in regular use.

A warm welcome to HP Community!

Does the issue occur if you print from another device?

How is the printer connected, USB or wireless?

Does the misalignment occur if you copy multiple pages?

Let me know!

Thank you for your reply.

It also happens when printing from an iPad.

All printing we do is wireless.  There is no USB connection.

As far as I can tell, it seems to happen only when printing a single page - but that's what I do most of the time.  I print multiple pages or copy single or multiple pages much less often, and the problem is intermittent.

I believe the issue can be caused due to several reasons since it occur from multiple devices. It's possible that it could be an issue with the the application that you are printing from, printer driver on the devices or the printer receiving corrupted data packets. Updating the Printer firmware, router firmware and the software on Apple devices may resolve the issue. Here is how to do it:

Please ensure that the printer firmware and router firmware is upto date. If you are unsure, you may use the steps available here to update the printer firmware. Instruction on how to update the printer firmware can be found on router user guide.

Once you are up to date with the printer and router firmware, use the following links to update the Apple devices:

Update iPad

Not exactly sure what could be the possible cause of the issue. I would suggest contacting your regional HP Support for further help, since they would be able to remotely diagnose and find out the root cause and suggest a possible fix. You may contact your regional HP Support from here
