My 8720 printer almost never goes to sleep. That is, the control panel always stays lit, displaying the home screen
and the question mark to the left of the screen. This is a relatively new condition -- in the past, the control panel would
go dark after a time of no use. This current situation is a problem for me since the control panel lights up an area where
people are trying to sleep. Other information: the printer is connected to a landline for FAX, and to a WiFi network for printing. It is used for printing by a W7 laptop and a W10 laptop, both with the HP software installed. Any suggestions appreciated.

Welcome to the HP support community.
I understand that the printer display is lit even when you are not using the printer, I am glad to assist you.
Did you turn on the printer sleep mode?
If not, follow these steps:-
Use the following instructions to change the period of inactivity before the printer sleeps.
1. From the printer control panel, touch or swipe down the tab at the top of the screen to open the Dashboard, touch .
2. Touch Sleep Mode, and then touch the desired option.

SandyTechy20 -- Thanks for the help. Unfortunately the "Sleep Mode" must not be working for me.
It is set for 5 min. Much of the time during the, when the printer is being used, it does indeed go to sleep.
But not every time -- so the display is lit up all night on many occasions.
Any ideas appreciated.

Sandytechy20 --
Thanks for the suggestion, but no cigar.
I installed the SmartHP app followed the instructions for updating
the printer's software, and was told it is up to date.
Let me know if another idea hits you.
The printer behaves properly except for this issue with the control screen display,
so I imagine the solution is something simple.

Sandytechy20,
Thanks for instructions on how to reach HP support, even tho I am out of warranty.
Unfortunately neither of two different support technicians - one in Manilla, the other in Mumbai,
were able to get my problem fixed despite two 45 min troubleshooting sessions. Both agents tried
different flavors of device reset procedures. Neither worked, display still ignores the 5 min sleep timer.
In addition, the reset caused my HP instantink connection to be dropped, and it took another 45 min to get
that reestablished. Altogether, not a good experience.
Do you have any other suggestions ? or should I just assume that something in the hardware, like a timer, has broken
and just plan to live with it ?
