8720 does not print booklet properly OR register back to back object location, any MS Office product

I am unable to print a booklet on my 8720 because the print is offset about 1/4 in laterally. I confirmed this is a printer issue in that double sided printing from any office product produces the same offset.

I just reread this subject and your inquiry.  I may not understand the question.  The following may not be relevant to "register back to back object location".  ???

 Personally, I've  not had problems printing booklet in the way I think you mean.  Unfortunately, I no longer have my Officejet Pro 8740 or the Officejet 8630 (older model of this Pro series) on which to test "what I believe to be the case".

Assuming what you say it true, your options are limited.

For example, if Office is not providing the level of control you seek, try exporting the file to PDF and printing the booklet format using Adobe Reader DC or Foxit Reader (very similar to Adobe and has some nice options.

Reinstall / Update your PDF Reader (Adobe Reader DC /Optional  Foxit Reader)

• HINT: Watch out for and UNCHECK unwanted extra software
• Adobe Reader DC software should be installed even if you do not open / view / print PDF files directly from the software.

What about Office Word and print margins / booklet printing?

NOTES

• I cannot any longer test the setup for you using the same printer series.
• I am running Microsoft Office Home and Business 2019 - there may be disparities due to the version of Office. Windows version 1903. 

Where to look?

Check the document margins.

NOTE

Keep in mind the printer has minimum requirements for top / bottom / side margins.  If you set your document to "Narrow" margins, this will suffice for the following and for several OfficeJet Pro models that can easily handle the "Narrow" .5 inch margin setting.

Word - Margins used with Booklet - "Gutters"

For example,  the "Gutter" settings impact the margins (how the content is printed).  You can adjust the gutter settings.

Know if that if / when you do adjust the gutter setting, the resulting changes will also be transferred to the PDF format (should you decide to export the document to PDF).  PDF does require a different margin minimum than might other formats so although the gutter should adjust, you cannot "shove the content" to the outer edges of the printed output.  PDF document can be printed to "fit" the page / page; it cannot likely print to the edge of the paper.

The following example is from the Officejet Pro 8630 - as I recall, the setup was the same for the 8740.

Word document > File > Print > set options on main menu > Click Page Setup > tab Margins

Duplex (and Booklet) printing “Preserve Layout”

Preserve Layout:  This feature only works with duplex printing. If the image / content (to be printed on the page) is larger than the printable area, select this feature to scale the page content to stay within the margins so that extra pages are not created.

Control Panel > icon view > Devices and Printers >

Right-Click Printer > Printing Preferences > tab Layout > Advanced >

Under Printer Features > Preserve Layout (select) Yes > OK
