I recently purchased a 9010e. so the other day it reported that 2 cartridges (C and Y) were empty. As I just needed to print text I just tried to switch it to monochrome printing, but to my astonishment that doesn't seem to be possible. So I purchased substitutes for the 2 cartridges which were reported depleted but the printer kept prompting me to replace the "depleted" cartridges.  I bought the original and extremely expensive cartridges so for the life of me I don't understand why it keeps prompting me for replacing depleted cartridges. This is a new printer and the first HP and already I'm having problems and expenses that I find apalling. I Do have to change ALL the cartridges at the same time ?

Hi @Dissatisfied100 ,

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

No, you do not need to replace all cartridges at the same time for the HP OfficeJet Pro 9010e. However, there are a few key considerations:

Why the Printer May Still Prompt for Replacement

Cartridges Not Properly Installed:

  • Ensure that the new cartridges are seated correctly in their slots. Remove and reinsert them to confirm.

Non-Genuine or Incorrect Cartridges:

  • Even if they are HP-branded, make sure they match the model number required for the OfficeJet Pro 9010e (HP 962 or 962XL cartridges in most regions). Counterfeit or incompatible cartridges can trigger errors.

Depleted Ink in Other Cartridges:

  • HP's printing system uses all cartridges, even in monochrome mode. It uses small amounts of color ink to maintain the printhead and improve black text quality. If any cartridge is entirely depleted, the printer may not function.

Firmware Issues:

  • If the printer firmware is outdated, it may misreport the ink levels or refuse to recognize new cartridges. Update the firmware through the HP Smart app or printer settings.

Setup Cartridges:

  • If you recently purchased the printer and are using "setup cartridges" (included in the box), they must be replaced with standard cartridges for normal operation once depleted.

Steps to Resolve the Issue

Verify Cartridge Installation:

  • Remove the cartridges, inspect them for damage, clean the contacts gently with a lint-free cloth, and reinstall them.

Check Ink Levels:

  • On the printer display or through the HP Smart app, check the status of all cartridges. Replace any that show as empty or faulty.

Run Diagnostics:

  • Access the printer’s "Tools" or "Maintenance" menu to run a printhead cleaning or diagnostic.

Update Firmware:

  • Go to the HP website or use the HP Smart app to download and install any firmware updates for your printer.

Reset the Printer:

  • Turn the printer off, unplug it for at least 2 minutes, then restart it. Sometimes, this clears miscommunication between the printer and cartridges.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hi @Gaya1239

Thank you for taking the time to reply. The problem was the Magenta cartridge, which was also depleted. This, however was NOT reported by the printer - only the two other cartridges I mentioned. Only after doing a "reinitialization" did it report that the magenta cartridge was also depleted (switching it off and on did NOT trigger any message from the printer).

So after buying and installing yet another cartridge, the printer seems to be working now.  The real problem however is that I basically just bought the wrong brand of printer. That fault is mine entirely but It'll probably break when the warranty runs out anyway, so I'll just buy a proper one at that time.

Anyway - thanks again for taking the time to post a reply it is much appreciated.
