Just one day, when I click to "open scanner" says software for "%@" failed to run.   -9927

I had not done any computer updates or changes.

This is a MacBook pro.

I have the same problem on Mojave 10.14 and it started today after working on on 10/21. I have no idea why it stopped. No Help so far from HP

Interestingly the same thing happened to me today, yesterday it was working fine.

Apparently my Mac SSD disk was having some trouble (a couple of "btn: invalid btn_btree.bt_key_count" when running First Aid) and I fixed it. But either it was a completely unrelated problem or that failure damaged some system files related to the scan function, I don't know, because I still got the same message.

Fortunately the web-based scanner still works. I can scan by either using the HP Smart App, or the Embedded Web Server (EWS). It will be good to know of other, more comprehensive solutions.

I was having the same problem--scanner worked yesterday and not today (no upgrades, Mac OS Mojave 10.4). Thank you SO much for suggesting using the HP Smart app. Worked perfectly!

Having same problem...interesting all posters seem to be having this problem today...

It really looks like those who are experiencing this issue are running older software signed with a certificate that expired today.

Please update your software using HP Easy Start as mentioned above.

1. Download HP Easy Start

2. Follow the prompts for setting up your printer.  When you get to the software download it will show whether the software needs updated or not.  If it does the box next to Printer Essentials will be checked by default and you just need to select the Install button.

The following should not be necessary but if you want to be extra diligent and guarantee a clean new install.

1. Download HP Easy Start

2. Open HP Easy Start and Select the HP Easy Start Menu in the macOS menu bar.  In this menu select Uninstall HP Software.

3.Select Continue to start the Uninstall process

4. Once the uninstall completes.  Select Set Up New Device.

5. Go through the new device setup process by following the prompts.

6. This will lead to the software download/install prompt.

7. Select install and the remaining prompts to finish the process.

Edit:  Systems administrators and those unable to use HP Easy Start can use HP Easy Admin to download the software pkg files directly.

Any other ideas?

Hi.

Same problem here, since this morning. iMac with Mojave (10.14.6), HP printer/scanner F4200.

As suggested, I downloaded Easy Start and uninstalled first the old software. Now HP doesn't have drivers for my printer... How nice is that?

Update: I was finally able to find the driver, useless, since it was the same one I had before (same signature problem).

I install HP Smart, it won't detect my printer.

Any suggestions? What is that web based scanner someone mentioned??

I also cannot scan or print from the Mac. Tried both over the network and using USB connection. When trying to scan with mac Preview app get 'Software for "%@" failed to run. (-9927)'.

  • I installed HP Easy Start, it says "We were not able to automatically locate any software options for this product. Please go to the HP Website and search for product solutions there."
  • I went to support.hp.com to software and driver downloads and found Mac Printer Driver 5.1, release date Aug 4 2020, HPPrinterDrivers5.1dmg. Installed, but no change.
  • I tried the HP Smart App, but it won't detect the printer, it says "No printers available".

I can scan with the Embedded Web Server (EWS) as mentioned by other users (thanks!) so that's helpful, but would like to be able to scan and print from the Mac again.

I have tried everything to no avail! I’ve downloaded HP Smart and HP Easy Start, used via usb....no luck, would not find the printer. Dl’d the latest printer driver, released in 2020, and I was also pointed to another legacy driver...to which I converted to a dmg...unreadable and no luck. After about 5 hrs messing with it...there’s time I can’t get back. Ridiculous...and I just loaded new ink!
