I was unable to install drivers on a new HP printer and this number came up to contact HP tech support. I did and got shook down. Guessing I'm screwed. Let me know please.

You are welcome.
I am sorry you were trapped.
Were you not at the actual HP website, the URL difference would be subtle, perhaps just one number, space, or "dot" in the website path that landed you in trouble.
There are so many scam sites.
The most evil of these scam sites are also the most clever -- they might even spoof your browser history.
As many times as HP and other legitimate companies move to shut down the vermin sites, the rats "pop" back into action.
True - we are increasingly at risk.
I don't have an answer for that -- we all do our best.
AI cannot save us -- much of what baby AI is learning is perhaps based on what it finds on the Internet.
Ouch.

Welcome to the HP English Community --
Any number that suddenly "pops up" on your screen is not HP Support.
It is likely you landed on -- or previously landed on -- a website that means you harm.
Fleeced?
You might have options.
Contact your bank and let them know you are the victim of a scam.

Scams and Thieves
Lots of words that mean: Beware!
====================================
Whomever you contacted was not HP Support.
There are thousands of scam sites on the Internet - they are sneaky, fancy, and so, so convincing.
If you let thieves into your computer, you might have bigger problems than a cancelled check.
- HP Support does not post free-to-find phone numbers on the Internet,
- HP Support does not transfer you to scammers and thieves,
- HP Support does not threaten, promise, lie, beg, or cajole,
- HP Support does not sneak into your computer,
- HP Support does not track you later and tell you "It's time for a paid update" for software they sold you the first time.
- HP Support does not sell any products to clear your computer of imaginary bugs.
HP Support requires that you submit your online in-Warranty Repair request to the proper channel for your region.
Beware of Fake Sites
The "Real Deal"
123.hp.com - Printer setup from the HP® Official site
Be very careful when out on the Internet looking for help - one little dot, space, or letter out of place can land you in trouble.
The official HP 123 site is where you can find the appropriate (and free) software and drivers for your printer.
There are many “fake” sites listed (in search engines) for “123” – please make sure you are using the actual “HP” site.
If you are asked for money to correct "issues" on your printer or computer OR if the “help” wants to sell you software, threatens you, or wants access to your computer, you are using a “fake” site. Do not give these people your information!

Request for Review – Please Read
A request has been submitted to our HP Community moderators for review and evaluation of your concern.
Worth Noting
- Our HP Community is a peer-to-peer user group.
- We are not HP Technical Support -- We are not associated with HP Sales, Service, or Warranty.
- Our request for assistance on your behalf does not guarantee HP will respond nor does our request influence the outcome.
- The time frame (how long it takes) to receive a response from HP is not controlled by the Community.
Important
- HP does not free-post HP Support numbers on the Internet. Not. Not in secret, not in chat, not in pop-ups, and not so a nice technician can call you back, sneak into your computer, and then tell you your computer is full of bugs.
- Be wary of any posted messages in the Community containing phone or email links – these are likely scammers who mean you harm.
- Please do not post any personal information in the Community. We are a public resource.
- Be very careful when out on the Internet looking for help - one little dot, space, or letter out of place can land you in trouble.
