I am using an Officejet Pro 8720 as network printer in a Linux environment.  I am unable to print anything but Letter and A4 format. I need to print A5 cards. The input tray wants to center the cards (Portrait), but the printing appearsleft top aligned (for Letter paper). I can't stack the cards with the paper tabs all the way open, they scatter.

I can offer the following limited observations:

The printer supports A5 paper size in Tray 1 - the issue is perhaps a configuration issue.

For example,

Change the orientation in HPLip or in the print manager.

I do not understand the following (from your post):

I can't stack the cards with the paper tabs all the way open, they scatter.

In general,  I believe "cards" are printed in the "open" position, that is, they are not placed into the tray already folded and then printed.

The tray has a set of 'horizontal' and a 'vertical'  tab That force the blanks into the middle of the tray (horizontally), but the printing assumes that iot starts at the left top corner. There is no layout adjustment that allows shifting to print towards the center.

Using the LANDSCAPE orientation doesn't get the printing into the right place either. I have selected A5 in the printer setup dialog and on the printer itself. It makes no difference.

I work primarily in Windows - we do have a couple of Linux installations in the office that I can use for general reference.  Forgive any misrepresentations.

The content - and therefore the printing results - might need to be adjusted before the document is printed.

LibreOffice (Word type) document?

For example,

In the case of a Word (LibreOffice) document,  adjust the content and the margins in the document before it is printed.

Example:

Document_Word_A5_Setup_1Document_Word_A5_Setup_1

I wish I could assist - I think my perspective is different enough that I cannot visualize what you are doing.

Perhaps another Expert better versed in your setup can help.

Thank you Dragon Fur.Tray + Location of print (purple)Tray + Location of print (purple)

I am trying to illustrate the problem. The photo shows the A5 card in the tray, the purple overlay shows where the printer tries to place the picture. Things are complicated somewhat by the fact that the content is generated by a a Java/Javax app via the Javax printer API. It is to ultimately run on a different (Windows) computer. I can produce a jpg image of what should go on the card, but it too tries to print offset to the left.
