HP Officejet Pro 8600 e-All-in-One Printer - N911a

Office Pro 8600 gets an error message "problem with printer or ink system" after installation of a new HP cartridge. Recycled power several times, all cartridges checked and appear okay (no damaged gold fingers, etc.). Removed and reinstalled several times. Ran HP printer diagnostic tool. Fixed a "port" issue but still get the same error message. I suspect there is a cartridge connection or carrier problem. Not sure what to try next?

@Tony_Luc, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding an "There is a problem with the printer or ink system" error message!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Try these steps:

Check for obstructions in the carriage path

Clear obstructions from the carriage area inside the printer.

  • With the printer on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  • Open the door to access the carriage inside of the printer.
  • Look in the carriage path for debris such as crumpled paper or dislodged labels, and then remove any that you find.
  • Use your hand to move the carriage to each side, making sure it moves freely. If the carriage is stalled or docked to one side of the printer and you cannot move it, continue with these steps.
  • Close the carriage access door.
  • Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer, and then turn the printer on.

If the error persists, continue to the next step.

Reset the printer

Reset the printer to recover from printer failures.

  • With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the printer.
  • Unplug the power cord from the power source.
  • Wait 60 seconds.
  • Reconnect the power cord to a wall outlet and to the printer.

note: HP recommends plugging the printer directly into a wall outlet.

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!

The issue began after I replaced the black ink cartridge. That's when the problem with printer or ink system message appeared. I reseated the new cartridge several times and reset the printer multiple times. There is no obstruction on the printer carriage rod and when I reinstalled the depleted cartridge, the same replace ink cartridge message appears. I also remove the ink cartridge carrier and checked for debris and damage. I also tried a different full cartridge and still the same message. There must be a contact or some other physical issue with the black cartridge port.

@Tony_Luc, It sounds like the issue might be with the cartridge port or the contact points inside the printer. Since you've already tried resetting, reseating the cartridges, and checking for debris, here are some additional troubleshooting steps you can try:

Clean the Cartridge Contacts

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the wall.
  • Remove the black ink cartridge.
  • Using a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water or isopropyl alcohol, gently clean the gold contact points on both the cartridge and the cartridge slot inside the printer.
  • Allow the contacts to dry completely before reinstalling the cartridge.
  • Turn the printer back on and check if the error persists.

Update Printer Firmware

  • Check for any available firmware updates from the HP website.
  • Download and install the latest firmware for the Office Pro 8600 model.
  • Sometimes, outdated firmware can cause compatibility issues with newer cartridges.

Perform a Hard Reset

  • Turn off the printer and disconnect the power cord.
  • Press and hold the Power button for 30 seconds.
  • While still holding the Power button, reconnect the power cord.
  • Continue holding the button until the printer starts, then release it.
  • This can help clear any internal errors.

Test with Genuine HP Cartridges

  • If you’re using a third-party or refilled cartridge, try replacing it with a genuine HP cartridge.
  • Some HP printers are sensitive to non-HP cartridges and may trigger an error.

Run a Printer Self-Test or Diagnostics

  • On the printer’s control panel, navigate to SetupReportsPrint Test Page.
  • This can help identify if the issue is with the black cartridge or the printer hardware.

If none of these steps work, the issue might be with the cartridge port or internal wiring, which could require servicing. Let me know how it goes1

I have exactly the same problem and have checked everything, including reinstalling the old cartridge and 2 different brand new cartridges.   From the recent comments, it seems like many people are suddenly getting this "print failure" message.  I have tried to reset by holding power button for 60 seconds.  I cannot get back to the screen to do a full reset as the power failure message does not allow me to get back to any other screen!   Printer worked fine until I had to change the cartridge.  Please HP support give us some guidance to solve this problem.
