officejet pro 8720
macOS 10.14 Mojave

An annoying alarm went off at 7 am.  Nothing was displayed on the screen.  Tapping on the screen did not display anything anomalous. I pressed the on/off button and the alarm got louder.  I kept pushing the button for a long minute and the sound finally stopped, and then the printer turned off.  There is nothing in the manual nor the HP web site had any information.  I turned it back on and have printed printer status reports OK.  No one was up at that time of the morning, and nothing was in the print queue overnight.

What happened?

@Kwajmeck,

Thanks for reaching out to the HP Support community!

This issue sounds quite unusual because the printer does not have an alarm feature.

It could have been because of incoming fax due to which the printer was ringing.

You can either turn off the fax volume off (if the fax is not used) or reduce it.

  • From the printer control panel display touch Fax > Touch Setup > touch Preferences > Touch Fax Volume > Touch to select Soft, Loud, or Off.

Let me know if this helps.
