Cartridge carriage stuck in "home" position and won't come out when the access door is opened. There are NO paper jams, even though the LCD display occasionally suggests otherwise. We have had a handful of Pacific Gas & Electric's "Public Safety Power Shutoffs" last Fall, possibly while the printer was turned on, but nothing recently, One day it just stopped working.
Other than that, the printer looks and behaved like new. I bought a much flimsier OfficeJet 8035 to replace it, but I have two questions about the 6500A Plus.
1. Is it reasonable to repair it and put it into service elsewhere?
2. If it needs to go to the recycling center, it there a way to extract the print cartridges and use them elsewhere. The whole set of 920XL-series cartridges were essentially new.
A quick response would be really cool.

Welcome to the HP Support Community. I understand the print carriage is stuck. I'd be happy to assist you.
Kindly perform the steps mentioned in this document to clear any jams inside the printer.
If these steps are already tried and the issue persists, this is a hardware failure.
The printer cannot be serviced in this condition. I suggest you upgrade the printer. You may visit Hp Store to check the available printers.
If you can, apply force and try moving the carriage manually to remove the ink cartridges.
Note: Make sure it is not connected to power supply.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted.
