OfficeJet 4654
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I recently purchased and installed a OfficeJet 4654 printer.

I used it for a few days with no issue.  Including automatic duplex printing.

Now when I attempt to print duplex (both sides of the paper), the printer prints on one side of the paper, then I  have to manually remove and then replace the paper to get the second side(page) printed.

I assume there is a setting that needs to be changed.

I did try resetting the printer to factory default, this did not fix the issue.

Any help would be appreciated.

@msuguydon, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

  • Which application are you trying to print from?
  • Have you tried printing different types of documents like PDF, Word, or Webpages and check if the issue persists?

Refer to this document to know how to print on both sides from a Win PC.

If the issue persists, use the HP Smart app to print from your Win PC and check if that helps.

Click here to download and know more about the app.

1.) Launch the HP Smart app.

2.) Touch the "Print Documents" tile and open your  PDF document.

3.) Touch "Print".

4.) Touch on the grey line above the printer's name. Change 2-sided to ON

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Kumar0307,

Thank you for responding to my question.

To be clear.  I am able to print duplex.  However, I can only print Duplex via the manual technique of manually reinserting the paper into the paper cassette to allow the printer to print the second side.

I have tried printing from several applications, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and the issue is the same for all applications.

If I use the HP Smart Print App, I can only print PDF formatted documents and the same issue persists.  Only manual duplex printing.

After doing some research, it appears that this is an issue that is effecting all 4650 series printers.

After a Windows 10 update the printer does not recognize the Automatic Duplexer.  When you open the printers properties and switch the printer preference to "Automatic Duplexer Installed" and apply the setting.  The preference switches back to manual duplex printing when you print.

It appear there is no solution available at the moment.  HP needs to send an update to resolve this bug and fix it.

Update the printer firmware

Click here to download and install the latest firmware from your computer.

Try printing on both sides as mentioned on page 16 of the user guide.

If the issue persists, please reach out to the HP Support in your region regarding the service options for your printer.

Keep me posted for any other assistance.

Kumar0307,

Thank you again for your response.

I clicked on the link you provided for the firmware update.

I got the following error message.

Not Found

The requested "URL /pub/softlib/software13/printers/oj4650_2022A/OJ4650_2022A.exe" was not found on this server.

As for Page 16 of the Manual, it does not address the Automatic duplex issue.

That's unfortunate. I have checked the link and it is working fine. Try again.

  • Obtain the IP address of the printer – You can touch the “wireless” icon on the printer control panel to obtain the IP address.
  • Type the IP address at the top of your web browser to obtain the printer EWS page on your computer.
  • If you get any security notification, click on show details/advanced and 'proceed to this website'.
  • Look for print/paper settings and change the Duplex option to ON.

If the issue persists, as mentioned, kindly reach out to the HP Support team for further assistance.

Keep me posted.

Kumar,

Again, Thank you for replying to my message.

The link that you provided for the firmware does take me to the proper HP website to download the file and that page does load.  However, when you click on the "DOWNLOAD" file icon of that page, that link is broken and I am not able to download the new Firmware File.

So your link does work, the link to download the actual firmware file does not work.  So I am unable to download the new Firmware.

I tried your suggestion and loaded the EWS page for my printer.  Unfortunately there is not a "print/page" setting to change the option to Duplex.
