Black Ink will not print after inserting new HP 902XL cartridge for DeskJet Pro 6970.  I have not receive any error messages.  I have completed cleaning heads three times.  The colors are showing but not black on the three test pages.

@BuckeyePeach,

Thanks for reaching out to the HP Support community!

  • Do you have the same issue while making a copy directly from the printer?

Let's try these steps:

Step 1: Check the ink levels and replace low/empty ink cartridges

Check estimated ink levels to see if any ink cartridges are critically low or empty.

Touch the ink icon on the printer control panel to check the ink levels.

Step 2: Clean the ink cartridges manually

  • Remove the ink cartridges.
  • Clean the ink cartridges.
    • Gather the following materials: A clean, lint-free cloth, A clean, dry cotton swab, Distilled or bottled water.
    • Lightly dampen a clean, lint-free cloth with bottled or distilled water
  • Gently wipe the copper-colored contact on the ink cartridges.

  • Wipe the contact with a dry, lint-free cloth
  • Examine the vent area located on top of the ink cartridge, next to the HP logo.
  • If any of the ink cartridges have clogged vents, use a pin to clean the vents.

  • Re-insert the ink cartridges
  • Try to print/copy.
  • if the issue persists, proceed to the next step.

Step 3: Update the printer firmware

  • Refer to this link to update the printer firmware.
  • Once the update is complete, try to print again.

Let me know if this information helps.
