Officejet Pro 8100
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Printer stopped working between two print jobs. HP Smart reports "printer disconnected". Not even possible to print test pages using the printer buttons. Black ink cartridge lamp is blinking, but the cartridge is not empty. Replacing the black cartridge does not solve the problem. Pulling out the power chord for a while does not change anything. Removed all ink cartridges and printhead for inspection and reinstalled them. Black ink cartridge lamp still blinking and printing is not possible.

Any suggstions out there on how to fix this?

Hi @jaerha,

I'd like to help!

I understand that the black cartridge icon is blinking on the printer.

Try the below suggestions to resolve the error-

Let's try a power reset on the printer

Reset the product

  • With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  • Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  • Wait at least 60 seconds.
  • Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
  • Reconnect the power cord to the printer.
  • Turn the printer on. HP recommends plugging the printer directly into a wall outlet.

try updating the printer's firmware - HP Printers - Updating or Upgrading Printer Firmware

Also, try the steps in the document -Blinking Lights on the HP Officejet Pro 8100 ePrinter Series

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Thanks for helping, but, sorry, the resolutions you suggest do not work. Power resetting the device has no effect. (By the way, why does power resetting include a step of unplugging the power cord from the wall outlet after having unplugged the cord from the printer? Sounds like magic 🙂 There is no firmware option available on the HP website for this printer series, and I think I now have tried all other suggestions that I find on HP web sites for similar problems. It is the black cartridge lamp on the printer display that is blinking (no other indications), but does that necessarily mean that it is the cartridge that is defective? The printer behaves the same way with two different cartridges, and I do not wish to buy yet another one.

As this is a printhead issue, I’d recommend you contact HP Phone Support in your region regarding service options for your printer.

Follow the instructions below to reach them:

1) Click on this link - https://support.hp.com/us-en/contact-hp

2) Select your product type below.

3) Enter the serial of your device.

4) Select the country from the drop-down.

5) Select the chat or get phone number options based on your preferences.

6)Fill the web-form and proceed further.

If you are having trouble navigating through the above options, it's most likely because the device is out of warranty. If yes? please send me a private message with the region you are contacting us from. Check next to your profile name, you should see a little blue envelope, please click on it.

Hope this helps!
