When printing a document that is mostly black text and a small amount of colour the printer uses the colour cartridges for everything.  Is there any way to force black text within a colour document to print with the black cartridge?

Hi @Soxcap

Welcome to the HP Support Community. I'd be happy to assist you.

  • Which application are you trying to print from?
  • Have you tried printing different types of documents like PDF, Word or Webpages and check if the issue persists?

You may change the print settings to either print in greyscale or color.

Refer to this document to know how to make changes to the print settings on your MAC.

Refer to Print in color or black and white: Select or de-select Black & White on the main dialog. The Presets menu also includes color and black and white options.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

 Hi @Kumar0307

Thanks for your reply.  I understand that greyscale or colour mode has to be selected.  My problem is that in a document with a small amount of colour (so colour mode needs to be selected) the predominantly black text in uses colour cartridges instead of the black cartridge.  It means the cost of printing such a document is much higher.

Hope that clarifies my issue and that you can help further.

Enjoy your day!

@Soxcap

I understand your concern. If the original document you are trying to print has color in it (in small or large quantity), and if the printer is set to print in color mode, it will print that part in color. If you set the printer to print in greyscale, the whole document will print in black and white including the color part.

This is as per the design and universal for all printers.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.
