HP ENVY 4520 All-in-One Printer

Hi, I am having the same problem as the user below and I have tried the same troubleshooting steps but I still have a blank display screen on my printer. The power button does not turn it on/off. I cannot remove the ink cartridges to do a power drain. Please advise. I appreciate any help and suggestions.

Hi @catclimber

Welcome to the HP support community.

I understand you're experiencing an issue with your HP Printer, and I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. I'm here to help you today.

If the display on your HP ENVY 4520 All-in-One Printer is blank, it can be caused by several factors, including a power issue, firmware problems, or a hardware malfunction. Here are some steps to troubleshoot and hopefully resolve the issue:

1. Check the Power Connection

  • Try a different power outlet to rule out a faulty socket.
  • Check the power cable for any visible damage or loose connections.

2. Perform a Power Cycle (Soft Reset)

  • Turn off the printer using the power button (if the screen allows).
  • Unplug the power cord from the back of the printer and leave it unplugged for at least 30 seconds.
  • Plug the power cord back in and press the power button to turn the printer back on.

This can help reset the printer's internal components and might bring the display back.

3. Check for Printer Error

  • Check the paper tray and ensure there are no paper jams.
  • Check ink cartridges to see if they are properly installed and not empty.
  • Look for any error lights on the printer that might indicate a problem.

4. Update Firmware (If Applicable)

  • Open the HP Smart app or visit the HP Support Website to check for updates.
  • Follow the instructions to update the printer firmware if needed.

5. Reset Printer to Factory Defaults

  • Turn off the printer.
  • Hold down the power button and then press the Cancel button (if available) for 15 seconds.
  • Release the buttons and see if the display comes back to life.

I hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Hi, I appreciate the suggestions. I have tried the applicable ones (I can't take the cartridges out, they won’t move since I can't select something on the screen, etx) and I still have the blank display. Do you have any other recommendations? Thanks again.

Hi @catclimber,

Thank you for your response,

Here are some advanced troubleshooting steps that might help.

Hard Reset with Power Supply Reset

  • Unplug the Printer:
    • Disconnect the power cord from the printer and the wall outlet.
    • Remove any USB or Ethernet cables.
  • Reset Power Supply:
    • Press and hold the printer’s power button for 30 seconds to drain residual power.
  • Reconnect:
    • Plug the power cord directly into a wall outlet (avoid power strips or surge protectors) and reconnect to the printer.
    • Turn on the printer and check if the display responds.

Inspect and Clean Hardware

  • Inspect Carriage Movement:
    • Even if the cartridges don’t move, open the access door and gently check if the carriage is stuck. Don’t force it but ensure no obstructions are blocking movement.
  • Check for Foreign Objects:
    • Use a flashlight to inspect inside the printer for any debris, paper scraps, or dust. Clear these carefully.
  • Clean Contacts:
    • Use a clean, lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water to clean the cartridge contacts and carriage contacts.

Blind Firmware Update via USB

If the display remains blank, the firmware might need a recovery or update, which can be done without using the screen:

  • Download the latest firmware from the HP support website.
  • Connect the printer to your computer via USB.
  • Open the firmware file and follow the on-screen instructions to update the printer.
  • Restart the printer and check the display.

Safe Mode Reset (Hidden Button Combination)

The printer may have a hidden reset or diagnostic mode:

  • Turn off the printer.
  • Try these button combinations (one at a time):
    • Hold down the Power and Cancel buttons, then release after 15 seconds.
    • Hold down the Power and Resume buttons, then release after 10 seconds.
    • Hold down the Power and OK buttons, then release after 15 seconds.
  • Turn the printer back on to check for changes.

Test with a Different Power Adapter

If available, test the printer with a compatible power adapter from another HP printer. Faulty adapters can fail to supply enough power to the display.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
