HP OfficeJet Pro 9730e Wide Format All-in-One Printer
macOS 12.0 Monterey

I set up my new printer this week and printed borderless 8.5x11 and 11x17. Next morning I was getting error messages on paper trays and after unplugging the machine for a minute those messages went away but unfortunately I am no longer getting borderless pages in either size. This is the primary reason I bought this printer and the fact that it did print borderless a few times, then stopped, is really frustrating. I've tried printing from Adobe Acrobat, InDesign, and Preview all with same results -- about a quarter inch border all the way around on each page.

Hi @AnnGeddie,

Welcome to HP Support Community!

We noticed that this thread hasn't had any updates in a while since your original post; while this is rare, we didn't want this post to remain unanswered, so here's the solution to your query. We hope it helps you and everyone viewing this post 😊

I completely understand how frustrating it must be to see your HP OfficeJet Pro 9730e suddenly stop printing borderless after it worked perfectly at first, especially when that feature was a key reason for your purchase. Let's work together to get this sorted out.

1. Confirm Borderless Settings in Print Dialog

When printing from apps like Preview, InDesign, or Acrobat:

  • Go to File > Print.
  • Click Show Details (if hidden).
  • Under Paper Size, choose a size that explicitly says “Borderless” (e.g., US Letter Borderless or 11x17 Borderless).
  • Under Print Settings, ensure Paper Type is set to a compatible photo or brochure paper.
  • Make sure Scaling is set to 100% and Margins are set to None.

2. Reset the Printing System (macOS)

Sometimes macOS gets stuck with old printer settings:

  • Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
  • Right-click (or Control-click) in the printer list and choose Reset printing system.
  • Re-add your HP OfficeJet Pro 9730e and try printing again.

3. Update Printer Firmware and macOS Drivers

4. Use HP Smart or HP Utility

  • Open HP Smart or HP Utility on your Mac.
  • Go to Settings > Printer Settings > Paper Handling and verify that Borderless Printing is enabled for the trays you're using.

5. Check Tray and Paper Settings on the Printer

  • On the printer’s touchscreen, go to Settings > Paper Setup.
  • Make sure the tray is set to the correct paper size and type (e.g., Letter Borderless or Tabloid Borderless).
  • If the printer thinks the paper is not suitable for borderless printing, it will default to standard margins.
