My HP OfficeJet 5200 is stuck on the "cartridge missing" screen. I'm no longer using the printer function due to ink cartridges drying out from infrequent use.

I would still like to continue using the scanner function but can't get past this error message. Please provide me with the steps to bypass this screen.

Hi @Schakes,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I see that you are facing an issue with your printer that has an ink cartridge error.

A) Please follow the steps below to perform a power drain.

1) Take out the cartridges

2) Unplug the power cord from the printer & wall.

3) Press and hold the power button down for 15 seconds and release the power button, wait for about 30 seconds.

4) Plug the power cord back into the printer and wall, ensure the printer is plugged into the wall & not into a surge protector.

5) Insert the cartridges back into the printer.

Remove the cartridges > Unplug the power cord > Wait for 30 seconds > Plug the power cord back in > Insert the cartridges

B) Kindly refer to the steps on this link to update the printer firmware and let me know if that resolves the issue.

C) If the issue still persists, refer to the steps on this link to further troubleshoot.

Hello,

I can't complete the actions in step A or C because I've returned my cartridges to HP to be recycled. I can't complete the actions in step B because I can't get past the missing cartridge screen, to reach the main menu.

Hi @Schakes,

Were you able to try updating the printer firmware by using the HP smart app installed on any of your devices that are connected to your printer?

Take care and have a good day

Hello,

I'm able to connect and add the printer to the HP smart app but it switches between "printer is offline" and "printer status unknown" while the "missing cartridge" error is displayed; opposed to just "printer is offline" when powered off. The "diagnose and fix" sent me here and I have no options for updating the firmware.

I last used it in January 2024, it had no cartridges at that time. it's connected via wifi and there's no ethernet cable connections on the printer that I could see, just phone line connections.

Hello,

I'm having trouble following these steps, given the link you provided:

"I request you talk to HP Phone Support and they will help you to sort it out as it requires replacement or repair based on the warranty available.

1. Click on this link -  https://support.hp.com/us-en

2. Select the country.

3. Enter the serial number of your device.

4. Select the country from the drop-down.

5. Click on "Show Options".

6. Fill out the web form. A case number and phone number will now populate for you.

OR

You can reach out at HP USA Customer Support"

There's no country selection, the only box for entering my serial number is for "Identify your product for manuals and specific product information", and following that text box there's no options for country or more options.

If there is a web form, I would prefer to use that.

Thank you,

Schakes
