Hi @rhbarr,
A warm welcome to HP Community!
We might be able to clear the error by power resetting the printer and updating the printer firmware. Here is how to do it:
1) Make sure this printer is plugged into a direct wall, not a surge protector
2) Remove all of your ink cartridges and printhead from the printer and close the door
3) Remove the power cord from the back of the printer (Do no press the power button)
4) Plug the power cord back into the printer
5) Wait for the printer to turn on completely, then install the ink cartridges and printhead.
6) Use the steps available here to update the printer firmware.
Let me know how it goes!
If the information I've provided was helpful, give us some reinforcement by clicking the Accepted Solution and Kudos buttons, that'll help us and others see that we've got the answers!
Have a great day!

That's unfortunate. Since those steps failed to resolve the issue, it's possible that's its a hardware failure and the printer needs to be serviced/replaced. Please contact your regional HP Support to obtain all available service/replacement options. You may reach them from here.

Thank you for your response. I went through your step-by-step and had no luck. I could not update the firmware because of the error. Could it have anything to do with bad printheads? I thought that I saw something somewhere that said to change the printheads. I hate to spend the $200 for new printheads if that will not fix the problem.
