Photosmart C4480 with Macbook Pro running BigSur 11.5 via USB connection. HP Photosmart Driver 5.0.5
Printer had been working fine with this Macbook. I installed new genuine HP cartridges (74 and 75) and printer went into alignment mode. Alignment page printed fine (black only -- should there be color?) but then when I go to scan alignment page, it makes scanning sounds but then tells me "Alignment Page not detected.... Alignment failed...may continue but cartridges not calibrated " But when I try to print something from computer, whether using both b&w and color, or b&w only, nothing prints. The page just comes out blank. I tried turning printer on and off. No difference, just forced to print out another undetectable alignment page. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling cartridges...only result was yet another undetectable alignment page. I tried cleaning printheads twice up to level 3, each time a black and white only sheet emerged. When I check HP utility it shows "Supplies: Good" but when I try to open "Supplies Status" in HP Utility, the utility quits and I have to reopen. Have done 3 times now and it crashes each time. Please help get my printer working again. Thank you.

@kss2, Welcome to the HP Support Community! I’m here to help.
This printer is not AirPrint compatible and has no printer driver available on the HP Support site to work on macOS 11 due to its age.
This printer does not support the HP Smart app too on a Mac.
For more info on this issue, refer to this document.
However, Gutenprint (formerly called Gimp-Print) provides open-source basic print drivers for many printers that would otherwise not be supported in Mac OS X. To see if your printer is supported, go to Gutenprint drivers for more information.
NOTE: Gutenprint drivers are not supported by HP or Apple.

Printer worked fine with my system (after I had help from HP a few months ago with driver to work with BigSur) until I installed new ink cartridges whereupon I started getting message alignment page not detected (after I printed out alignment page and went to scan it) and lost ability to print even with black & white setting, whether color cartridge removed or left in. When the alignment page prints out the only colors I see are yellow and black. Could this really be a driver problem or is it more likely a printhead or ink cartridge issue? (I have tried 2 different unused genuine HP 75 color cartridges. )
Should all colors print out on the alignment page? Is lack of colors why the alignment page is not detected?
Is there a way I could at least get black & white capacity back whether printer aligned or not. I just desperately need to print some documents before I travel out of the country.
Thank you.

I understand your concern. However, there are no drivers for the printer to work on macOS 11. This model printer cannot be added using Airprint drivers too.
