Just installed an Officejet Pro L7780 with a duplexer.  I am not getting any pop-ups - but am sure wasting lots of paper as it merrily prints single-sided ... despite having followed the steps suggested.

Nice printer - but the double-sided printing was one of the key reasons for purchasing this!

There must be something other than the el sucko, half-baked driver that is causing the one-sided print issue. But then, the way HP has been about driver support lately, it could very well be the driver not reacting to your model the way it does in the other Cxxxx models. I have a C7250, and finally got it to work as advertised after reading all these posts and fiddling around for two months. That's just not right, or moreover fair, especially to someone who has little to no technical knowledge and is expecting a plug & play experience.

Suggestions (from an old ERP software demo'er): Did you go into the "Control Panel/Printers/ (model #) /Properties/Device Settings tab" and turn on, in Installable Options, Duplexing (if it says Not Installed, click that and a drop-down appears to select Installed)? Is it also set, on your Printing Preferences (for either the default setting or the one-off seeting whenever you print) to "Two Sided Printing: Automatic"?

This may seem simplistic, but I always believe in "Begin at the beginning" to solve a problem.

try the d7360 driver. It serves me much better than the origian C7280 and its printing duplex without any annoying popups.

you can find it here:

Sorry for the delay in thanking you for your response.  I had done all those steps and after turning it off overnight, I tried again and it worked - and has been working fine ever since!  Guess it must have been your positive thoughts!

Thanks!

Yes, there's a lot to be said for shut down/reboot. My C7250 for the last few days has been printing incredibly slow, like 1 B&W page per min., and the printing indicator which shows the ink levels down in the lower right corner was saying it couldn't connect with the printer. I shut it down (had to upplug it, the OFF button wouldn't respond) and after about ten minutes, turned it back on and VOILA! everything is back to normal. Go figure.

There is a new driver update listed for C7280 that claims to solve this. Released 2009-04-18, filename PS_AIO_02_110_008.exe. Testing this shortly.

This is great news, and about b****y time too!  Please keep us up-to-date on this.  If it works for you, I'll install it as well.

I can confirm that in my one test print, for the first time ever on Vista Home Premium 64 bit with C7280 printer, I did NOT get the "duplex unit not installed" warning box, and it correctly printed double sided.

Strangely the "HP update" program on my machine said that my software was up to date, so I had to download and install this manually.

Cheers!

Those HP people are so weird.

They wanted me to fill out a Customer Service survey a few weeks ago, and I returned a blistering tirade about how bad their QA and Customer Service was regarding their development and maintenance of the printer drivers. Told them to go onto their own forum and read the comments, because apparently the call centers aren't passing the complaints on to them - maybe so they can mark the problems "resolved" all of the time?

Anyway, good to hear they took action. Through all of the workarounds, my c7250 is working perfectly (except for reporting a lot of paper jams) so I'm really afraid to mess with it right now.

The driver is now on the HP site, and mentions a fix for duplex printing in the release notes. It's available for general download here:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=mp-69847-1&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&...

The support page that shows the error message andtells you to just press print has still not been updated however - so no marks for helping the customers there still!

I love the printer, but am surprised that it takes so long to fix an annoying bug for what is a pretty high-end device for them.
