The answer is that there is nothing preventing you from doing so.

The question is whether you want to risk this nice printer by choosing to do so.

Refilled ink is not a splendid choice for any printer of any brand - eventually the use of non-branded, refilled ink will likely damage the printer ink system and the rest of the printer components.

Some of the checkpoints won't work - checking ink levels, for instance.

Using refilled ink likely violates the terms of your printer warranty .  This is easily resolved:  never ask for help from HP Tech Support.

If the printer suffers any print quality issues, it is possible that any help offered in the printer support documentation or here on the Community will be useless or at least compromised.  Refilled ink is not warrantied, not recommended, and its use compromises quality tests.

Personal choice.

Dragon fur, that's not what I wanted to hear, but I understand better now. Thank you for such acomplete answer.  Looks like I'll have to eat that ink I ordered.  Is there anywhere to buy OEM ink cheaper than HP.  For what they charge for the ink they could give the printer away.  My OEM ink purchase will cost more than the computer.  I like HP, I have had two printers now and my current lap top is an HP.  Good equipment.

You are welcome.

I have two printers at the moment:  HP Officejet Pro 8630, and an HP Officejet 8740 (HP loaner).  I like both of these printers - the 8630 was my personal favorite for the last couple of years until I got my hands on the 8740.  Loaner or not, I like this printer.  Smiling.

I don't have any secret magic ink supply - I buy from HP SureSupply - the shipment is free and offers next day delivery service.   It's easy.

Honestly, even as much as ink costs, it is not something on my personal radar - I just take care of it like I do the Utilitly bills and I don't dwell on the cost.

OK... no sales here - I am providing the following as FYI.

HP offers the Instant Ink subscription service for qualifying printers in supported regions.

This is not, as some people seem to believe, a "free ink" service.

Ink IS provided as part of the subscription at no extra cost.

Instant Ink is a print-by-page subscription.

Every page is counted, whether there is a single word or a complete document or image on the paper.

Duplex is "two pages"

Full size color photographs equal one page.

Where you can save money:  If you print full pages of documents / images at a fairly steady rate per month, the subscription - because it is "page" based and not "ink" based - can save money because all the ink that you use is provided as part of the subscription.  Instant Ink cartridges are larger (hold more ink) than regular (or even XL) cartridges - you don't have to change ink as often.  Instant Ink use is monitored on the printer by the service - when ink is needed, the service orders it and sends you the ink.

When the service is terminated (cancelled), the Instant Ink cartridges (at this writing) remain the property of HP; the cartridges should be removed from the printer and returned to HP.  Instant Ink cartridges stop working a short period of time after the service is cancelled (so keeping them is useless to you).   You must purchase a full set of your own ink cartridges and install them into the printer.   This tidbit is not a secret - the subject is clearly explained in the Terms of Service contract.

Instank Ink Service may - or may NOT - be of value to you.
