OfficeJet Pro 8720 printer will not print because one of the original color cartridges that came with purchase of the printer is empty.  The settings for my printer is to always print in black or gray scale and I never print in color.   I got this error message  .. "Depleted cartridges must be replaced to resume printing",   and now I can't get a Word doc to print in black because a color cartridge is empty.   Is there a ways to get around replacing color cartridges and print only in black?

Hi! @grammyx5, Welcome to HP forums.

I understand you have issues printing in black when the color cartridge is depleted.

Don't worry I'll try to help you out.

Did you make any changes to your printer?

Does the issue persist when you make a copy from your printer?

Have you installed full feature printer software?

Have you tried printing from a different application?

Your printer is designed to print only when all ink cartridges have ink. A little ink from all the ink cartridges is used in periodic servicing tasks. This helps to prevent issues such as printhead clogs and poor print quality. There is no way to bypass this feature

Check the ink level on your printer and replace the low ink cartridge.

Change the print settings to print with black ink only.

You might need to change your print settings every time you print.
   NOTE:
These steps vary by software, program, and operating system.
In your software application, click Print.
Select your printer from the list of available printers.
Click the option that opens the Printer Properties dialog box. Depending on your software application, this option might be called Printer Properties, Options, Printer Setup, Printer, or Preferences.
Click the Features tab, click the Grayscale drop-down menu, and then click Black Ink Only.
   NOTE:
To use even less black ink, select the Draft setting.
Click OK, and then click Print to start the print job.

Refer this article to know more information when one of the HP Ink cartridges is empty.
