macOS 12.0 Monterey

Hi

This regards a HP Color LaserJet MFP M476dw printer. The black cartridge is full, the three color ones need replacing.

We can print black and white from iOS devices incl iPhones and iPads using AirPrint but can not print from Macs that are on Sonoma OS. The latter Mac OS I can not select for this form hence Monterey was selected. I updated to the latest driver on an iMac, removed the set printer and reselected it. No luck, the print job goes into pause on the Macs. I never had this problem but since we do not need to print color urgently but do urgently need to print B&W es, and the prices of the HP cartridges are ridiculously high, I want to resolve this. Also when I enter the serial number in the HP portal it does not recognize it. Any help to resolve this would be great. thanks !

The matter in which laser printers work, preclude a device from printing if all cartridges are not in a printable state to prevent damage to the printer. If you only print monochrome you should consider purchasing a monochrome laser printer.

Thanks but  as I explained in my post I can print from iOS devices but not Macs so I do not understand your reply sorry. And from experience with this printer and others incl a Xerox one you I have always been able to switch to monochrome until the new color cartridges came in.

I have the same exact issue and it started the past few weeks.    I have been using black toner only for years without an issue and all reports show there is no problem.    Have you been able to find an answer yet? Thanks.

Unfortunately not, very frustrating, and the HP online support database is useless for this problem. Let me know if you find a solution. It must be a bug although the latest driver update did not resolve the problem.

@NLESH , that is interesting information. Typically with laser you can print until the colors are completely empty and that sometimes can run on for months after a low warning, however you cannot "remove" the color toners and have it work and there is no hardware override on the printer that would allow that. Just clarifying for other people who may view this. Quite a few inkjets offer run on black only support. As for Xerox, I have no training on that product so your experience is useful to hear.

I finally received the 3 HP original color toner cartridges. All went well, Macs, ipphone, and iPads see the printer with all full cartridges in printer supplies. I can print with no problems from the iOS devices, including in color but from the Macs, same problem !!! Except... when I do s test print from the HP utility application on a Mac. Prints like a charm!  It sees as I wrote the printer and that supplies are good but goes into pause when I print a page, the same page that can be printed from the iOS devices. I restarted the MACs, removed the printer driver and reinstated it, still the same problem. Can anybody knowledgable preferably from HP please resolve this problem ? Thanks !

For others that might be having the same issue, I spoke to HP TAC and I now know the source of the problem.

My problem was the same as reported with my HP MFP 476dw.  I replaced my black toner cartridge with an HP cartridge, the other color cartridges were still good and I printed many documents from my Apple MBP several weeks ago.  Last week, my MBP running Sonoma 14, suddenly reported low toner and it wouldn't print.  Like the reported problem, after a couple of hours of updating and troubleshooting, I noted my iPhone would print the same file just fine.  I spent two hours with Apple support, they helped me load the lates HP software, I delete the printer from the settings, reinstalled and nothing worked.  In the end, the MBP reported the print jobs to be waiting for the printer to be ready.  The printer was ready and the internal diagnostics reported everything was fine.

In the end, I called the HP support number, it required a fee of $39 because the warranty had expired, I agreed to pay and I was very fortunate to speak to a support person that spoke perfect English, understood the Apple environment and quickly determined we had an expired security certificated.  After update the certificate, the printer was fine and it still is.

So, why doesnt' the HP update the certificate automatically, or report the problem as such?  I presume that once the certificate has expired, nothing works.  I recommend calling HP, spend the $39 and call it a day.

Just for the record, I am displeased with the HP staff member that replied to this thread, requested private email communications and never posted the outcome, but was glad to find the HP TAC member I spoke found the problem quickly and easily.  It's possible this problem will affect other older printers for the same reason, so be on the lookout and call HP.
