HP 7740 Office Jet Pro

I bought a brand new HP Officejet 7740 and I have been trying to connect it to my Microsoft Surface Pro. I have updated my drivers. I have gone through almost every trouble shooting scenario I can find. I have even tried to call HP help but nothing has worked. I downloaded the HP Smart app. However, I cannot get past the step where it looks for the printer. My Surface cannot find my printer. My printer has an excellent connection to my WiFi network. The same WiFi network that I have my Microsoft Surface connected to. I cannot get my Surface to find this printer.

Hi @AGrib,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand how frustrating it can be to encounter difficulties when trying to connect your printer to your Microsoft Surface Pro. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and hopefully resolve the issue.

  • Check Network Connectivity: Ensure both your Surface Pro and the HP Officejet 7740 are connected to the same Wi-Fi network. Sometimes, even though the printer is connected, the Surface might be on a different network.
  • Restart Devices: Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve connectivity issues. Try restarting both your Surface Pro and the HP Officejet 7740 printer.
  • Verify Wi-Fi Signal: While the printer might be connected to the Wi-Fi network, it's worth checking the signal strength. Weak signal can cause connectivity problems. Move the printer closer to the router or try connecting to a different Wi-Fi network.
  • Check Printer Settings: Ensure that the printer is set to be discoverable on the network. This option is usually found in the printer's settings menu. Refer to the printer's manual for instructions on how to enable network discovery.
  • Update Printer Firmware: Check if there are any firmware updates available for your HP Officejet 7740 printer. Updating the firmware can sometimes resolve compatibility issues.
  • Disable Firewall/Antivirus: Sometimes, firewall or antivirus software on your Surface Pro might block the connection to the printer. Temporarily disable them and try connecting again.
  • Use Manual Setup: If the automatic setup isn't working, try manually adding the printer to your Surface Pro. Go to Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners > Add a printer or scanner. Follow the on-screen instructions to manually add the printer using its IP address.
  • HP Smart App Troubleshooting: If you're using the HP Smart app, ensure that it is up to date. You can also try uninstalling and reinstalling the app to see if that resolves the issue.

By following these steps, you should hopefully be able to resolve the connectivity issue between your Microsoft Surface Pro and the HP Officejet 7740 printer.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
