I have a HP Laserjet M209dw printer that won't power on. The front indicator light doesn't work. The five buttons on top aren't working. If I unplug and plug it back in the printer "gets ready" to print, making the typical noises that a printer makes when you power it on, but the lights/ buttons don't work and my computer says it's offline. The orange and green ethernet lights inside the receptacle work though. I have tried pushing all the buttons (Power, Cancel, down arrow, info and wifi) but the printer does nothing.

Hi @rrogacki,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you've already tried some basic troubleshooting steps, which is a good start. Here are a few additional things you can try to troubleshoot the issue.

  • Check Power Source: Ensure the printer is connected to a working power outlet. Try plugging it into a different outlet to see if the issue persists.
  • Power Cord: Check the power cord for any signs of damage. If possible, try using a different power cord to rule out any issues with the current one.
  • Reset Printer: Sometimes a reset can help resolve issues with electronic devices. Try performing a power cycle by unplugging the printer from the power source, waiting for a few minutes, and then plugging it back in.
  • Inspect for Obstructions: Open the printer's covers and inspect for any paper jams or foreign objects that may be obstructing the printer's mechanisms. Even a small piece of paper can sometimes cause issues.
  • Update Firmware: If the printer has an option for firmware updates, consider updating it to the latest version. Sometimes software glitches can cause issues that are resolved with updates.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hello,

Is there a way to update firmware if I can't get the printer to power on?

Hi @rrogacki,

Thank you for your response,

Updating the firmware might be challenging, but it's not entirely impossible. Here are a few steps you can try.

Power Cycle: Sometimes, printers can get into a weird state that prevents them from turning on. Try the following steps:

  • Disconnect the power cord from the printer and from the power outlet.
  • Wait for about 1-2 minutes.
  • Reconnect the power cord directly to the wall outlet (bypassing surge protectors or power strips).
  • Plug the power cord back into the printer and try turning it on.

Reset the Printer: Many HP printers have a reset option that can help with power issues. Look for a small hole or button near the power port labeled "Reset" or "Restart." Use a paperclip or similar tool to press and hold this button for about 5-10 seconds. Then try turning on the printer again.

Check for Physical Damage: Inspect the printer for any physical damage, loose connections, or burnt components.

USB Firmware Update: Some HP printers allow firmware updates via USB. If you can find the latest firmware for your printer model on the HP website, you might be able to update it using a USB flash drive. Here's a general guide:

  • Download the firmware update file from the HP support website.
  • Save it to a USB flash drive formatted with FAT32.
  • Insert the USB drive into the printer (if it's powered on and functional).
  • If the printer recognizes the firmware file, it may automatically start the update process.
  • If the printer doesn't turn on, this method won't work.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
