HP OfficeJet Pro 8710
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

My HP Officejet Pro 8710 won't print correctly to 5x7 card stock.  I put the paper in correctly, make sure the size is set correctly on both the computer and printer, set the paper type for thick, make sure the paper guides are up close to the card stock, and the image I'm trying to print comes out turned sideways and off-center.  I've changed the orientation every which way on the computer.  I've also tried turning the card stock so it is inserted into the paper tray in portrait orientation but it won't go through the printer that way - it just slides and leaves roller marks on the paper.

I've tried different programs such as PPT, Word, PDF format, etc.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled the printer drivers and the temp files.  I've tried everything, but cannot get this one simple image to print in landscape orientation on 5x7card stock.  The card stock rolls through the printer just fine and doesn't jam or anything.  It's just that the image is turned sideways no matter what I do to the orientation settings.  I am BEYOND frustrated after having spent HOURS trying to do this one thing that should be SO SIMPLE!

@KBowling,

Thank you for posting your query on HP Community,

Are you having issues only while printing on card stock or even while using different type of paper.

Are you able to print a print quality test page from the printer?

Print a Print Quality Diagnostic Page, and then evaluate the results.

  1. Load plain white paper in the input tray.

  2. On the printer control panel, swipe down to open the Dashboard, touch the Setup icon , swipe up on the display, touch Reports, and then touch Print Quality Report.

  3. A Print Quality Diagnostic Page prints.

  4. Evaluate Test Pattern 1 to make sure the lines are straight and connected.

Could you please respond to this post with the details so that I can provide you with accurate steps which should help you resolve this issue.

Waiting for your response!

Thank you 🙂

Thank you for responding!  Your directions were very clear!  I printed a test page and everything printed fine.

It is not the card stock that is the problem, but the 5x7 size.  To be  certain of this, I printed the same 5x7 image I'm trying to print on card stock on a piece of regular printer paper cut to be 5x7 sized.  It printed with the same wrong image orientation as the card stock.

The paper and card stock both come through the printer just fine but the image is turned wrong and off-center.  I have tried changing the orientation of the image (landscape to portrait) and re-printing but it comes out the same way regardless.

I have added photos to this post of the way I am loading the paper in the paper tray and of the way the image comes out when it is printed.  I appreciate any help I can get to resolve this issue!

@KBowling,

After looking at the screen shot it either looks like a settings issue or driver related.

Let's first try to check the settings, make sure you select the correct paper size, paper type, orientation.

For more details, please follow this support link: HP Printers - Print Driver Settings Guide (Windows)

If the issue still persists, I would suggest you try to print from different application and check if that works.

If nothing works, then I would suggest here is to uninstall the printer from the root level and then reinstall the printer by following the steps below:

  • Press “Windows key” + “r” to get the “Run” window.
  • Type "services.msc" to get Services – Go to “Print spooler” – Right-click and “Stop” the service.
  • Now again open "Run" - Type “spool” and ok - Go to PRINTERS folder - delete everything in that folder.
  • Go to services again - Start the print spooler.
  • Now check for issue resolution.
  • If the issue persists, also try clean installing the printer drivers. Here are the steps:
  • First, unplug the USB cable from the printer if present.
  • Go to Control panel – Programs and feature – Select all the HP Officejet printer entries and uninstall them.
  • Now go to Control panel – Devices and printer – Select all the printer entries and remove the device.
  • Press the "windows key" + "r" to get the "Run" window open - Type "printui.exe /s" (There is a space between .exe & /) and press enter.
  • Under print server properties, go to drivers - remove any entry there as well.
  • Again, go to the Run window, type – “c:/programdata” – Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Please click here to download and install the software.
  • Connect the USB cable if prompted and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.

Keep me posted on how it goes!

Cheers 🙂
