Hi @MamaKenzie,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand your HP Smart Tank 5102 All-In-One Printer is showing an issue with the ink tanks during setup, here are some troubleshooting steps you can try:
Check Ink Tank Levels:
- Make sure the ink tanks are filled to the correct levels. Sometimes the printer might not recognize the ink if the levels are too low or if there is an air bubble in the ink line.
Reinsert the Ink Tanks:
- Remove and reinsert the ink tanks to ensure they are properly seated. Sometimes the connections might not be made properly if the tanks are not fully inserted.
Ensure All Protective Tapes are Removed:
- Double-check that all protective tapes and covers have been removed from the ink cartridges and the printer. The orange tape on the printhead carriage must be completely removed.
Check for Air in Ink Lines:
- If you see air bubbles in the ink lines, you may need to perform a priming process to remove the air. Consult the printer's manual for specific instructions on how to do this.
Reset the Printer:
- Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source. Wait for a minute, then plug it back in and turn it on. Sometimes a reset can help resolve recognition issues.
Update Printer Firmware: Update the firmware on an HP printer
- Ensure your printer's firmware is up-to-date. Check HP's website for any available firmware updates for your printer model.
Clean the Printhead:
- Use the printer's utility software to clean the printhead. This can sometimes help if the issue is related to ink flow.
Run Printer Diagnostics:
- Use the HP Smart app or the printer's built-in diagnostics tools to run a diagnostic check. This can help identify any specific issues with the ink system.
Consult the Manual:
- Refer to the printer's user manual for any specific troubleshooting steps related to ink tank issues. There may be model-specific steps that need to be followed.

I hope this helps.
