I need to turn off the automatic firmware updates but I can't. The printer says it's enrolled in the HP ink service so this option is locked.
Does anyone know how to get it unlocked?
My HP ink service ended last month (after receiving a hefty bill due to school work printing in lockdown)
I found out the printer wasn't accepting aftermarket cartridges because of the automatic updates. I've bought original now for the time being but really want to use the aftermarket ones. HP has taken enough out of my pocket now!

Thank you for posting on HP Support Community.
Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, I have a few troubleshooting steps we could try to fix the issue:
- 1. From the printer control panel, touch or swipe down the tab at the top of the screen to open the Dashboard, touch ( Setup ).
- 2. Touch Printer Maintenance.
- 3. Touch Update the Printer.
- 4. Touch Printer Update Options.
- 5. Select Install Automatically (Recommended) or Alert When Available or Off to disable automatic updates
Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

Thank you Echo_Lake for your reply.
I have tried this before, but at step 5 my printer has the following message:
This printer is enrolled (or trying to enrol) in Web Services or HP Instant Ink. To ensure continued, uninterrupted service, the 'printer update' settings are locked. For more information about the enrolment status or to read the terms of service, visit the HP instant ink website (www.hpinstantink.com)
When I check the website I can see that I'm no longer enrolled.
Just noticed another error on that website, it says Non HP Instant Ink cartridge installed even though I have HP cartridges installed.
So how to get it unlocked?
And can I downgrade the firmware so I can use aftermarket cartridges?

There is no option to downgrade the firmware on the printer. As the printer is enrolled in Instant Ink, the printer update settings are locked.
If you wish not to use the Instant Ink service, you may cancel it. Refer to this document to know how.
Once the service is canceled, you will have to use the regular HP ink cartridges.
If you wish to use non-HP ink cartridges, you may do so at your own discretion. HP cannot guarantee the functionality of non-HP ink cartridges. It may or may not work.
Keep us posted for any other assistance.

Thank you.
But the printer is already no longer enrolled for instant ink yet the options in the printer for automatic updates are still locked.
aftermarket cartridges are not working, the printer doesn’t accept them. (Really upsetting)
AND I CANT GET HP INK ANYWHERE, SOLD OUT, OUT OF STOCK. (HP303 in the UK)
Getting close to throwing this printer in the bin tbh and get something which has ink tanks or toners.
