HP OfficeJet Pro 8720 All-in-One Printer

I inherited this printer from a family member 3-4 years ago and have been using it successfully every since.  We canceled her InstaInk subscription, and I've been using cartridges that I buy at the store.  All of a sudden, I'm getting a message that the printer "cannot print" and I should contact "instaink.com" for help.  I've reviewed the communities posts that suggest the unplugging for 60 sec, removing cartridges etc.  I've tried checking firmware updates.  None of these things has worked.  One person reported finally getting a resolution after calling customer service and waiting, but I can't even figure out how to call someone.  Has anyone resolved this on their own?

Hi @lizziem5,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It seems like your HP OfficeJet Pro 8720 is encountering an issue related to the previous Instant Ink subscription. Since you've already tried some troubleshooting steps without success, here are a few additional steps you can take to try and resolve the problem.

  • Check for Firmware Updates: Ensure that your printer has the latest firmware installed. Sometimes, updating the firmware can resolve compatibility issues. You can check for firmware updates on the HP support website or through the printer's control panel.
  • Perform a Factory Reset: Sometimes, resetting the printer to its factory settings can resolve software-related issues. Refer to the printer's user manual or HP's support resources for instructions on how to perform a factory reset.
  • Reinstall Cartridges: Remove the cartridges and then reinsert them to ensure they are properly seated. Make sure you are using genuine HP ink cartridges.
  • Remove Old Instant Ink Settings: If your printer still has settings related to the Instant Ink subscription, you may need to remove them. You can do this through the printer's menu, but be careful not to delete any other settings.
  • Uninstall and Reinstall the Printer: Remove the printer from your computer's list of installed devices and then reinstall it. This can help refresh the printer's connection with your computer.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
