I have recently installed HP Officejet Pro 6968 to replace an old Officejet 7310. The old printer could easily print checks measuring 3 3/8" x 8 ½" (88mm x 217mm) but we are unable to do this on the 6968. The User Guide for printing on custom paper (Windows 8.1) suggests selecting “Create a form” found in “Printer server properties”. I do not find server properties but only printer properties and no link to creating a form. Someone suggested right clicking on the page to find the server, but no luck. Any suggestions? Wish I had my old printer!

Dragon-Fur, finally, after more fussing around with the Quicken program, as you suggested, I was able to find a way in the Quicken printer setup>paper>advanced to get the "Quicken checks" form that I set up to work! I am now able to print single checks correctly with the printer. Thanks so much for your help.

You may have accidentally selected Printing Preferences or Properties instead of "Print Server Properties" .
Control Panel > icon view > Devices and Printers >
Left-Click on your printer one time to highlight it >
Along the top ribbon, Click "Print server properties" >
Print Server Properties opens > (first) tab Forms

Wow! That was a quick and useful reply, Dragon Fur. I had not even looked at the top of the Devices and Printers page but had right-clicked on the printer. After clicking on the Printer server properties at the top I was able to get the Create a new form option. I entered the dimensions 3.375 x 8.5 inches (88 x217mm) and gave the form a name "Quicken checks". When I went to print, I was able to find Quicken checks as a paper size option under the paper/quality tab. Amazing, I thought. But when I went to print, the LCD screen on the printer indicated that "the paper size detected by the printer does not match the paper size". Tapping the modify paper X on the screen gave a list of paper sizes, but the Quicken checks did not appear as an option. The closest was Japanses envelope chou #4 (90 x 205mm). So, what seemed hopeful, turned out to be another disappointment. Can you offer any other suggestions? Thanks very much.

You are welcome.
Almost everyone "right-clicks" on the Printer -- it is hard not to do so when we are looking for menus and options. Need an option menu in Windows? Right-Click on something. Smiling.
Guesses:
Where are you seeing this "modify paper"?
"Tapping the modify paper X on the screen gave a list of paper sizes, but the Quicken checks did not appear as an option. "
I suspect the paper settings cannot be set to custom size on the printer screen. This may have to be sorted entirely on the computer side and within the print setup options.
("I suspect" is something I say when I don't know the answer. Rats.)
Check the software you are using to print and ensure you have a Media type (kind of paper) set -- something that is appropriate for the paper used for the checks.
For example, if the checkes are "thick" paper, set the Media type to something like "card stock", Brochure matte, or similar.
If you are using paper sizes in mm, then be sure your setting reflect that. If you are using inches, try dropping back to a "two digit" precision (3.37 or 3.38 inches).
Check with the good folks at your Quicken Support site and see what support and the members say.
I wish I could be more help -- I don't use Quicken and have not in my life printed a single check.

The “modify paper” message appears on the LCD screen on the printer. I concur with your suspicion about the lack of computer paper setup influence on the printer screen.
Regarding the media type, I have just been using standard plain paper cut to the size of the checks while experimenting. I have been using two digits, 3.78 inches.
And so long as the printer will not recognize the computer, I remain disappointed in the 6968, which otherwise seems to be an excellent device in speed and paper handling.
I will check with the Quicken folks for ideas as you suggest.
Thanks again.

Excellent!
I am glad you found the setup and pleased you have posted where the setup is located -- it will be helpful to the multitudes of Quicken users that want to print checks!
Should there still be questions, I suspect you will hear back from another Quicken fan.
Happy Printing!
