My new HP Envy 5546 works fine on set up - printing colour for trial pages, photos, copying etc BUT it will only print in black/greyscale when printing from computer from say, a Word file, a pdf ot whatever. Have seen various suggestions about altering settings but cannot find any settings on teh Mac or HP utility allowing you to tick for colour.

Is teh only way to unload the driver software - which looks complicated to do - and reload it all?

Any help much appreciated - I can't help but think this should be very easy - surely HP printers shoudl be plug andf play?

Hi @Keith26,

Thank you for posting on HP Forums,

Flower_Bud is at your service.

As I understand, your printer would not print in black.

No worries, as I'll be glad to help you, that said, I'll need a few more details to dissect your concern & provide an accurate solution:

When was the last time it worked fine?

Were there any hardware/software changes made?

Let's try these steps of Resetting printing system.

• Click the Apple menu icon, and then click “System Preferences”.

• Click “Printers and Scanner” / “Print and Scan” or “Print and Fax”.

• Right-click the blank space in the Printers list, and then click “Reset printing system”.

• Click “Reset” in the confirmation window.

• Enter an administrator username and password, and then click “OK”.

• Wait until the printing system is reset and no devices show in the Printers list

• Restart your computer and then go back to System preferences – Printers and scanners.

• Click the “Add button” (+).

• Find, and then select the name of your printer from the printer list, and then click “Add” to add your printer. Do not select an HP Fax driver.

• Click “Print Using...” or “Use”, and then select Secure AirPrint or AirPrint. Alternatively, you may select the name of your printer if available in that list.

Keep me posted,

Have a great day 🙂

Cheers!

Thanks for those suggestions. In teh event teh fix proved to be very easy. In the print options dialogue box I spotted that under 'Printers' there were actually two HP 5546. I have since been told that teh first is perhaps a temporary version available during start up, but teh second one was the full install. Once I deleted the first one, and therefore made the second one the default, printing in colour worked immediately! Thanks
