I have an HP Envy 7640 printer.  I can print and scan, but it will not make copies.  When I push the copy button,  I get a ring tone and nothing happens.

Hi @Sandeca ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are facing an issue with your HP ENVY 7640 e-All-in-One Printer can print and scan but cannot make copies, here are some steps to troubleshoot the issue:

1. Check the Copy Function

  • Ensure the Printer is Powered On: The printer should display the home screen.
  • Access the Copy Menu:
    • From the printer's control panel, tap Copy.
    • Select Black or Color to initiate a copy.

If the printer does not respond or shows an error, proceed to the next steps.

2. Check the Scanner Glass

  • Inspect for Dirt or Smudges:
    • Open the scanner lid and ensure the scanner glass is clean and free from dust, fingerprints, or smudges.
    • Use a lint-free cloth and glass cleaner sprayed onto the cloth (not directly on the glass).
  • Check the Document Alignment:
    • Ensure the document is placed face-down on the scanner glass, aligned with the guides.

3. Perform a Power Reset

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Wait for 60 seconds, then plug it back in and turn it on.
  • Try making a copy again.

4. Check for Firmware Updates Update the firmware on an HP printer

  • Via the Printer's Control Panel:
    • Tap Setup > Printer Maintenance > Update the Printer.
  • Via HP Smart App:
    • Ensure the printer is connected to the app, and check for updates under settings.

5. Reset Printer Settings

  • Reset the printer to factory defaults:
    • Tap Setup > Printer Maintenance > Restore > Restore Factory Defaults.

6. Test the Scanner

If the scanner can scan documents to your computer, it confirms the scanner hardware is functioning. If the copy function still doesn't work, the issue may be with the printer's internal software.

7. Perform a Hard Reset

  1. Disconnect the printer's power cord while the printer is on.
  2. Unplug the cord from the wall outlet.
  3. Wait for 60 seconds.
  4. Plug the power cord back in and turn the printer on.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hi:

I was able to run the scan doctor 5.7.4.  I got a green check mark on recommended updates, green check on device manager, Orange! in driver check, green check on device status, then an error Windows (WIA) Scan.  Checked for updates on the help tab and it says no updates available.  The registry box, HP scan, and test scan did not check green.  I am connected only by USB.  The printer is working & will print, but it will not scan or copy.

Hi:

Thank you for your support efforts, but the private link did not work either.  I think the printer just aged out.    I did purchase a new HP printer 9125e.  I was told by the Best Buy tech who did the installation that I could not ever turn this printer off. This printer is connected by both USB and Wi-Fi .  He said to run it in the sleep mode and that if I turned it off, the printer would not find the Wi-Fi signal when I turned it back on.   I turn off my computer and my tablet every night and it finds the signal, so this makes no sense to me.  Can I turn this printer off because sometimes I will go for a couple of weeks without using it.
