Officejet Pro 8500A Plus
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have an HP Officejet Pro 8500A Plus network connected to my Windows 10 pro PC.  Printer has worked fine until yesterday and now when printing from Word or even Notepad, I get an error message saying it couldn’t find Word.  In Windows settings under manage your device/print test page, it errors out saying it couldn’t print test page.  I can print to it fine from my laptop so no network problems and I can print to my laser printer from my PC.  But printing from the PC to the HP Inkjet, using Windows programs, it no longer prints.  In the settings app, under manage your device, I can open printer app/printer settings/printer reports and select printer status report and it prints fine. So HP’s software can print to it’s printer with no problem.  Still under the settings app, if I now select print test page it will print but it never clears the printer queue. It stays showing it’s printing until I reboot. The troubleshooter shows that nothing is wrong.

Thought that it might be a problem with winprint.dll since it had been updated recently, so I replaced that with an older version and stopped and restarted the print spooler but that didn’t help so went back to the original .dll. Rebooted and then I could print from Word or notepad. I only tried it 2 or 3 times and thought replacing the winprint.dll file and then going back to the original solved the problem somehow. Then today it’s back to the same problem, and I can still print to my laser printer and print to the inkjet through the HP printer app, but not through Word or notepad.

Hi @bdube ,

Thank you for responding,

It's great to have you back 😉

If you suspect that it's the update's which is causing this issue, then you could either try un-installing them , or perform a system restore to an earlier date when it was working fine. 🙂

If I have helped you resolve the issue, feel free to give me a virtual high-five by clicking the 'Thumbs Up' icon below,

Hi @bdube ,

Thank you for posting on HP Forums,

The Barachiel is at your service.

I understand you are in need of support,

I'll be glad to help you out, however, for an accurate solution I will need more details:

Have you attempted any steps on your own before posting on the HP Forums?

When was the last time it worked without these issues?

In the meantime, please try the steps mentioned below:

Follow this link and run HP's print and scan doctor. If it didn't fix, then follow the steps below:

Goto user appdata/local/temp and then right click on the temp folder, click on properties, then click on the security tab.

Under security tab, check whether all the permissions are clicked on allow.

Let me know how that pans out. 🙂

I hope you have a good day ahead,

And Feel free to ask any other queries as  well,

Considering, this forum has some of the best people in the world available and ready to help. 😉

Barachiel,

Thank you for responding. I though I was very thorough in my explanation as well as things that I have tried, but will provide you with any firther information you require to assist me. One problem though is that you first recommended HP's print and scan doctor that I could get at the link you provided. If you look at your messagfe, you didn't include any links to anyhting. I did find the program myself and will run it later and reply again with any findings.

So I ran the program and printed a test page. It either found no problems or fixed them but all the check marks were green and the software was the latest. But as I mentioned in my original post it never had any problem printing from HP software, only Windows programs like Word and Noptepad. Noramlly when I would get a failed print, even after selecting cancel in the print manager, it could never clear the spool file. I would have to reboot, then clear the spool file. If I then prionted an HP document from the HP software it would print fine and then I could select a Word document and it would print. Sometimes it ould clear the job in the queue and somtimes it wouls stay at printing even though the print job was over. Again a reboot and the queue would finally clear.  And in C:\users\appdate\local\temp, all users have full access to this folder. This is a printer tha tI use at home. Sometimes I will use it everyday and sometimes I might go 7-10 days without printing anything so the exact day this started is unkown. I noticed it Sunday  2/18 and the last time I used it without the problem was the Sunday before which would be 2/11.  In between those dayes, Microsoft installed some updates which may or may not have created this problem.  I would like to keep this open for a few days and try to use my printer more than I normally do.  The print and scan doctor didn't say it fixed anything, just all the things it did check came back with a green checkmark.

I am assuming the HP Print and scan doctor did resolve the problem, although it doesn't

seem to produce any log so I don't know what it actually did. I have only printed 2 or 3 pages from Microsoft Word, and haven't had any spool failure or lockups in same showing in the print queue and when I originally posted this, the only way I could print a Word document was to print something using HP software first and then I could print a document.

So for now, Yippee!! it looks like it's fixed.
