Printing automatically comes out the bottom, but there is no tray to catch the paper. Above that is a place that has a tray and it looks like paper can come out that way. How do i get the paper to print out on top where the paper tray is?

That printer works that way, paper exits out the bottom, and there is no tray to catch the printed sheet.

Then what is the tray on the top for? It's opposite the place where you put in the paper to be printed on.

That is the catch tray for the document feeder for the scanner portion of the printer. See owners manual http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c05203661.pdf
