Envy 5530
macOS 10.12 Sierra

Printer lops off top inch or so of content when feeding card stock (I make greeting cards for frienda and family).  It prints regular paper (almost always) wihout this problem.  It didn't start doing this until recently.

Does HP have an instruction for cleaning and/or adjusting the paper drive mechanism?

I imagine a sensor might be dirty, or a part of the drive system might be out of alignment.

Hello, @dickns33

Thanks for the update! & yes, cleaning inside the printer seems to be a good idea 😉

You can try to clean the paper path and the rollers inside the machine. I found a wonderful video which will guide you through the steps. Here you go: https://youtu.be/sm9O53vC_Wk

Hope that helps! Let me know!

Have a great day 🙂

Hello, @dickns33 – Hope you are well 🙂

Thanks for your continued participation in the HP Forums!

I see that you are facing issues with the Envy printer. Let’s try the steps listed below to try and fix the issue:

  • Click the Apple menu icon, and then click “System Preferences”.
  • Click “Printers and Scanner” / “Print and Scan” or “Print and Fax”.
  • Right-click the blank space in the Printers list, and then click “Reset printing system”.
  • Click “Reset” in the confirmation window.
  • Enter an administrator username and password, and then click “OK”.
  • Wait until the printing system is reset and no devices show in the Printers list
  • Restart your computer and then go back to System preferences – Printers and scanners.
  • Click the “Add button” (+).
  • Find, and then select the name of your printer from the printer list, and then click “Add” to add your printer. Do not select an HP Fax driver.
  • Click “Print Using...” or “Use”, and then select Secure AirPrint or AirPrint. Alternatively, you may select the name of your printer if available in that list.

Now, try to change the paper settings and then try printing.

Let me know if that helps!

Good luck 🙂

I've done the reset and the refresh driver, etc, steps (several times);  hasn't helped.

What is new is your suggestion that I "...try to change the paper settings".   Could you say more about what you mean by "paper settings"?

I use, and have the paper size set on "US letter", and have tried the various designations for "Plain Paper".

I've also tried feeding one sheet at a time.

The problem always occurs when I use card stock.  It rarely occurs (though not never) when I use regular paper.

The paper feed sensing or drive mechanism is almost certainly at fault.   How do I go about inspecting, cleaning and/or adjusting it?  Eg:  blast the printer's innards with compressed air.

Hello, @dickns33

Appreciate your efforts!

By changing the paper settings, I mean the paper type and the paper size. If you are using a different paper type, like cardstock, make sure to specify the appropriate paper settings such as paper type and the paper size.

You can check "Paper type, size, and input tray settings" here: http://hp.care/2uv2eOm

Hope that helps! Let me know!

THANK YOU!  I’ve been wrestling with this problem for months, on two separate threads of the HP Forum.  Your response, dealing directly with paper settings, is the first thoughtful one thatactually recognized the problem (the others were boilerplate [“reset printer” etc] and didn’t help).

OK – when I go to: File // Print // Plain Paper, Best //   Copies and Pages // Paper Type/Quality, I’m offered four main choices with some sub-selections:

Under “Specialty Paper”:

  Other glossy specialty paper

HP matte presentation or other matte paper

Under “Brochure”, three HP Paper choices:

HP Iron-on Transfers or specialty paper

HP Glossy Brochure or Professional paper

HP Matte Brochure or Professional paper

Plain Paper

HP Photo Paper

Which of the above selections should I use to print on card stock (110 lb paper)?

Note:  the printer worked correctly, including on card stock, for many months after I first got it, with the paper setting left at default (“Plain”). When the flaw started, it showed up with regular paper as well as card stock. However, the error has since disappeared when using plain paper.   So I expect there must be something that’s gotten dir blow out with "Air in a Can".  Even so, I’m now hoping that with your advice, an appropriate choice of paper will provide an effective workaround.

Hello, @dickns33

I was hoping that you will see a more similar paper type like card / cardstock 😉

Since that option is not there, we will have to go by trial and error method. also, what is the paper size you are using? Make sure to select the correct paper size as swell.

If this does not work, try to make a copy of the printer with the same paper. Place a document face down on the scanner glass and press the copy option on the printer control panel. Let me know if it makes a good copy or not.

Thanks, I'll watch for your reply!

Cheers 🙂

I'm heartened by your continued interest - thanks.

I use US letter-size paper for all printing, whether on regular paper or on card stock.

I expected that we might end up with a trial-and-error approach.  Well, so be it.  But it may be some time before I can get to that ("'Tis the season....").  I'll surely let you know the result.

In the meantime, any advice on cleaning/maintaining the innards on my Envy 5530 would be most welcome.  I'd remind you that in its early life, the printer handled card stock just fine on its default (Plain) paper seting.  And that the flaw, when it first manifested itself, occurred with all paper, spasmodically.  But now (with no intervention from me) it occurs  just on card stock.  Conclusion:  something's flopping around in the feed mechanism inside - a loose piece perhaps, or a shard of paper.  I need to know where and how to look, and then what to do.

First, let me express my appreciation for your "Listening" to my problem, and then researching the help I believed i needed:  how to clean the paper feed mechanism.  The video you found ang gave me the link to was clearand spot on.

Though I could see no dirt as I followed the video's cleaning instructions, when Ithen  ran a test page of a grid printed on card stock with "Paper" set to Plain.... it WORKED!  No truncation.

Note however that that was just one flavor of content (very simple B/W draft), and the problem's been  a bit intermittent.  While I don't now believe the fault was content-related, at one time I though the evidence pointed that way (caused or exacerbated by a heavy load of content).   So there might still be a lurking truncation problem, maybe with denser content (eg color-graphics), or maybe because it was intermittent.   We'll see as we go alonge, but at least the test worked, and I'm very encouraged - and hugely grateful to you for your persistence, patience, and particularly for reaching out to go the "extra mile".  Thank you!
