Alas, what I feared might happen, has happened.  The flaw returned.

After I followed the instructions in the paper-feed cleaning video, I printed a test page - a simple grid on card stock, with "Paper" set at default, "Plain" - and YAY! - it printed properly.   So I got cheeky, tried printing a full-page a graphics file.  Sadly, the content was lopped off just as before the cleaning operation.

I printed the same file on regular paper.  No problem.  So the issue is for sure confined to card stock feed.

I then repinted the test page on card stock, as before.   And OMG, the flaw was now back there too!   I suppose in the cleaning process I'd knocked something back into alignment, or pushed an invisible blockage out of the way, but the "fix" was ephemeral.  So  OK,  I went through the cleaning process again,  energetically  jiggling all the rollers (all seemed fine), but this time, I didn't get even that one-shot remediation.  Content stayed lopped off.

I then tried the work-around of using different settings for Paper Type/Quality.  "Matte Presentation" influenced the amount of truncation a bit, but didn't come close to fixing the flaw.

The printer thinks the paper has fed when in fact it's been temporarily held up - either because the feed's late in starting, or is slipping, or the paper's hitting an edge I can't see and overrides it only when pushed enough.

What should I do next?

(Note:  I've already gone through the whole Printer Resetting process,twice, but will do it again anyhow.  Please remind me of the appropriate link(s), particularly for updating Firmware.)

@dickns33

Hi,

thank you for your reply. 🙂

I suggest you to contact our HP phone support team to explore the available service options for your HP printer. The evidence points towards an internal failure.

Good luck!

Too bad.

I'll buy a new printer:  almost certaunly less costly in the end than paying for a phone consultation that probably couldn't resolve the problem, then taking it to a service center for repair.

Pity.... the printer works well in all other respects.

Thanks for the effort and thought you put in to help me with this.
