Hi @Phil0266,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If you're experiencing a carriage jam error on your HP Inkjet 8020 Pro Series printer, even though there's no paper jam and the carriage moves freely, there are a few troubleshooting steps you can try to resolve the issue.
- Turn off the printer: Power off the printer and unplug it from the power source. Wait for about 60 seconds, and then plug it back in.
- Inspect for any obstructions: Open the printer cover and check for any foreign objects, such as pieces of paper, paper clips, or debris, that might be blocking the carriage path. Make sure to move the carriage manually to both sides to check for any obstructions.
- Check for loose or damaged parts: Inspect the carriage path for any loose or damaged parts, including the printhead, carriage belt, and any gears. Ensure that everything is securely in place and undamaged.
- Reset the printer: Some printer models have a reset option. Consult your printer manual for instructions on how to perform a reset. This can sometimes resolve minor glitches.
- Update firmware: Check if there are any firmware updates available for your printer on the HP website. Updating the firmware can often resolve software-related issues.
- Perform a hard reset: A hard reset can help clear any temporary issues. To perform a hard reset, turn off the printer, disconnect the power cord, and wait for about 10 minutes before reconnecting and turning it back on.
- Reposition the printhead: If the printhead is not in the correct position, it can cause carriage jam errors. Manually reposition the printhead to ensure it's properly seated.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
