HP LaserJet MFP M140w Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I was in the middle of printing something today and then the printer just stopped. I've been messing with it for over a hour. Reset it 2-3 times, reconnected the wifi. The ! mark still blinks orange. I cannot get this thing to connect. I am about to throw it out the god **bleep** window!

Has anybody ever had this issue with this. I've read other people say that they connected their webservice for ink and it worked.

NO WIFI PRINTER should ever work like this. I've had Brother printers and Samsung printers, never once I had a printer that needed so much BS to connect itself and if something is wrong with your **bleep** account, it won't allow you to print. This thing is going to get chucked real soon if I don't get it to work. I'll never buy an HP ever again. On top of it, doesn't have a Ethernet port in the back where I can connect a CAT-5 cable to it. It's Wi-Fi only or nothing. Such a crock of crap. I hope someone from HP sees this and helps me or it's getting tossed. I work in the IT field as a network engineer. I never seen such garbage ever to be produced.

Hi @AaF1218,

Welcome to the HP Support Community

I understand you are facing a connectivity issue with your  HP LaserJet MFP M140w Printer. Not to worry I will help you to get a resolution to resolve the issue.

To assist you better:

  • Is the blue Wi-Fi light solid on the printer? ( if the Wi-Fi Light is blinking then please re-connect the printer back to your Wi-Fi router - Restore Wi-Fi setup mode on your HP printer, Once you restore the network to defaults, then please follow the instructions on this link to connect the printer back to your PC.)
  • How far is the printer located from the WiFi router?
  • Do you have a dual-band router?
  • If you have a Dual-band router and both 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks share the same name/SSID, the printer will not be able to connect to the network. In this case, contact your Internet service provider to assign different names to both networks.

While you respond to that, Let's perform a power drain:

  • With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and also unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  • Remove USB cable, if present.
  • Wait for 2-3 minutes, press and hold the power button on your printer for about 30 seconds to remove any additional charge.
  • Now plug back the power cable straight to a wall outlet without any surge protector or an extension cord (This is important) and then plug back the power cord to the printer.
  • Turn on the printer and wait till warm-up period finishes and the printer is idle

Update the printer firmware

  4. If a screen prompts you to turn on printer updates, click Yes.
  5. If a screen prompts you to make your printer the default printer, click Yes.

--->then go to settings on the main ews page --> power management ---> select sleep mode to max 15min

Connect the printer to TCP/IP port

--->Touch on the wifi icon ((i)) on the printer, and take down the IP address

a. Click Start/Devices and Printers.  Right-click on your HP Printer.  Select Printer Properties.  Select the Ports tab at the top.

b.    Select Add Port.  Select Standard TCP/IP Port.  Select New Port.

c.    Follow the Add Port Wizard.  Under Printer Name or IP Address. Example:  192.168.1.15.  The IP address will be copied under Port Name.

I was tearing my hair out with this issue then found that if I went into the advanced settings on the printer and went HP Web Services | Web Services Settings, I was able to turn on the link between the printer and my account and voila - I could then print and it stopped complaining about the printer not being connected to the internet. Should have been more obvious though.

@Harry07792 Hey man, have totally same problem with my printer — giving your solution a try as my last hope (took me hours already). Was the process of enabling those web services long? I'm having the loading status in there for 10-12 minutes and starting to wonder if it's actually going anywhere or not. Appreciate the time!

I find it criminal that HP can break a printer because something is wrong with your HP account. I had the same problem. All it could print was "Printer Information Report" sheets, saying that it can't print until I log in to my account and check for more information. This was my fathers printer, who passed away recently. He did not leave his HP account log in info. After half a day of trying to reset the printer and running it without an hp account I dumped it. It's just not worth it. A shame for the environment, a needless waste caused by HP's greed.
