Same here ! you're not alone... People at HP must be aware of it, but facing a big problem... how to revert or correct the error remotely....

I can sympathize with everyone's frustration. Even though I fixed my printer by replacing the formatter board, HP should be working to provide a solution for folks (so hopefully they are.)

Having said that, I've been researching how to extract the firmware image from the RFU file. It's not straight forward, but a number of research papers have been written on it. I'm hoping if I can get the image extracted, so I could test booting from USB.

The formatter board does understand the notion of 'Onboard' flash, so I'm hoping it also understands the idea of external storage as well. Fingers crossed.

I ordered the formatter board.  Katherine73 must live much closer than I do to the suppliers since mine is taking 6 days to get to me here on the West Coast from the East Coast.:->  Anyway, hoping to have it by this weekend.

I think I can replace the board, but how do I prevent the unit from taking any future updates?  We connected it via ethernet if that makes a difference.

After this experience, the only way I am going to take a future update is if someone in this forum says it is a must have.

The general layout of the embedded web server should be the same.  Un-checkmark the firmware upgrade options. You may want to either directly connect to the printer or disable your internet when you first connect so you have time to disable this before the printer downloads any updates.

@Jerrykur

First thing I disabled:

* Service->LaserJet Updates->Manager Updates->Check Automatically->No

* Service->LaserJet Updates->Manager Updates->Prompt Before Install->Yes

And yes, I live on the East Coast! 🙂 It took about 2 business days to arrive after ordering. It's an easy process to swap it out.

I had to manually upgrade the firmware over USB since the one I received had 2017 firmware. The only thing I had to do was updating the serial number via PJL, but the blog post I linked did a good job explaining the process.

Good luck!

While an instant solution would be wonderful, likely this will take some time for HP to resolve. Hopefully it will be a software fix and not something that will require replacement of the formatter. Obviously as we have seen with the experience of @katherine73  replacing the formatter does resolve the issue but that is an expense end users should not have to bear in my opinion.
