@Jerrykur, yes, I trimmed a couple millimeters off the end of the cable that was delaminated. Instead of scissors (which tend to curl when cut), I used a straightblade style cutter against a flat surface so the cut would be even and flat.

Also, the fitment for this particular cable seems to be the tightest on the board. Make sure it's fully seated as it's hard to get into the socket.

Update: I followed this blog post and was able to update the serial number of the replacement formatter board:
https://jacobsalmela.com/2015/02/05/change-the-serial-number-on-hp-printers-using-printer-job-langua...

Oh noooo .... so in order to mod printer's formatter board serial - that means i'd have had to write it down prior to putting the whole thing back together, hooking up all the lines & sticking it back on the shelf.  I'm am sooo stupid, and now get to do what should have been done.  Serves me right for trying to work on a half dozen tasks at once.

Just going to add myself to this list as I have the same problem.  Having read the entire thread and tried various suggested options (including factory reset, erasing queue, switching off Wi-Fi) will gamble on trying a new formatter board as suggested by @Katherine73 and hope that sorts out the problem.  Having just tried two new sealed genuine HP cartridges which indicate 'non HP chips'  and then bricking my printer with the "49 Service Error" I am hoping I may get a formatter board with a suitable firmware version installed.  Hopefully not good money after bad.  Will be thinking twice about getting any HP printers in future...

LOVE the new issue.  "Counterfeit or used" Black toner ......

Got replacement formatter board AND board serial mess straitened out as well as HP web service disconnected so HP  can't Brick us anymore.

BUT ... as mentioned by another, some 10 pages ago ...  the genuine black toner is now branded as fake/used.

Strange, all the other / color toners register as prior to HP firmware destructive flash stating "70% remaining".

We COULD open up our black inventory to see if all subsequent black inventory register as counterfeit ... but screw it ... once this printer dies again?  We are done w/ HP forever.  Should have never sold our HP5500hdw as that  monster 2 decade old device ran flawlessly.  Even at 25,000 pages/month for all those years.

If anyone knows an easy fix for the 281fdw w/ board replaced alleging fake toner ...  that'd be great

@Bitsaboy, maybe downgrade to 20200612 firmware image. This firmware image will let you run genuine or aftermarket toner cartridges. https://markohoven.com/2020/11/10/hp-laserjet-pro-m280-m281-printer-series-20200612-firmware-downgra...

Also, the serial number is on the sticker in the back of the printer. You shouldn't have had to take it apart.

I have the same excact issue, the display shows Resend upgrade. I only used oriignal catriges all the time. I tried nwo to downgrade, wihtout success, the printer just keeps quite. The first time in a 30 year perido with HP i experience an bricked device by the manufacturer himself..... **bleep** .... I don't want to throw away a 5 year old printer only because the software is not working anymore..... HP please do something about it!

  • I received my formatter board from Aliexpress today. I received a fdw board, but I ordered a fdn, since I have a M281fdn without Wifi ).
  • It was booting well, with some messages about missing WiFi device, but into Chinese language. Managed to switch to English. Firmware was 20190716
  • But then, printer was not accepting my toner cartridges ( saying: Incompatible supplies )
  • Upgraded to firmware 20220414 with HP update tool - same: 'incompatible supplies'
  • I downgraded to 20200612 using these instructions - same: 'incompatible supplies'
  • Changed serial number to my original number using this guide, same
  • Assumed there might be a logic that used cartridges can not be transferred to new printer. Opened and installed a brand new cartridge ( black ), but also that is not accepted.

Probably the board has a kind of country code and not accepting cartridges from european market? The printer device configuration shows: 'Location: China'.

Any idea what could be done?

Here is some device config data of my printer, after the board replace:
Product Name: HP Color LaserJet MFP M281fdw
Formatter Number: 5L75N99
Serial Number: XXXXXXX
Cartridge Index: MCIB HBCH
Service ID: 10009
Firmware Datecode: 20200612
Control Panel Version: 0x07
Disable Fax: No
Telecom Version: 04-006-002
Location: China

... me again:

Also I had a conversation with german HP printer support. Interestingly they acknowledged the issue. They told me , nothing could be done about it. Self repair not possible. Paid repair is also not possible because the printer is 'too old' and there is already the 'successor model' released (?!).

The agent then issued a voucher to get a discount of 20% for a new printer. I'd say this is better than nothing.

It was also interesting that she asked if I had the '79' error code at first and if I had done a factory reset. I confirmed both. Then she thold me that if you are in the 'Error 79' state, you could recover from the issue by disabling IPv6 - but you should *not* do the factory reset.
