What they have done that grenaded our printers is wrong and HP should at least have offered  to send us replacement format boards. My 5 cents

Our machine is the LaserjetPro MFP m281cdw

According to what I've seen online, the cdw and fdw share the same formatter board. I've started looking in earnest for one, but the cost in AUS $ isn't in my budget right now, but then ... I SHOULD NOT BE PAYING A **bleep** CENT, THIS IS HP's FOUL MESS, THEY SHOULD BE PAYING FOR ALL OF US.

I've just posted a hot-tempered message on their FB page with a link to this thread - wonder how long before my post "disappears" like my previous one did? Also duplicated the post on my own FB page.

Bought a 2nd-hand Fuji printer today because I really can't do what I need to without a working printer.

EDIT: And there it is.  My post has been removed from their FB page. I don't believe these people.

I am seriously disgusted with HP and their complete lack of anything even vaguely approaching a sense of responsibility. They are completely out of order.

I presently have a case [Personal Information Removed] with HP Support investigating this issue,. You might want to refer to this in any contact with HP

I'll update as this progresses.

@PrinterAssassin:

HP repair manual for the M281: If you look at Page 438 it clearly shows in detail how to disassemble the printer to replace the formatter board: http://printerhub.com.my/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/m281-repair-manual-1.pdf

Video: There's a video showing the procedure in detail. Even though the video is in Portuguese, it will be clear on what to do when you watch it. Be sure to unplug all cables and remove the paper tray before doing this step. Take your time prying open the side cover and you won't damage any tabs: https://youtu.be/IVEc8LnM_sg?t=451

What printer do you recommend to replace this one?  We are not willing to repair.

Ok thank you!  Do we need to totally take apart  the printer like the video shows??

to replace the formatter you should only need to remove the one side panel, the side that has the network connector on it, I believe that would be the left side if you are facing the printer.
