I updated  m281fdw to FW Datecode 20221010 about 2 weeks ago and immediately experienced the Error 49 reboot loop. Of course, as my printer was working fine, I was unaware of this issue prior to the FW upgrade attempt.

I was unable to look into the issue until today. Imagine my surprise when I found out that the offending FW upgrade was issued back in October and folks started complaining about it instantly. Why was this FW upgrade still available in mid November?

Ok, HP, here is what I've done - I attempted to use the virtual support option but that was useless; - I then tried the Out-of-Warranty Support number but was presented with "This service is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later."

HP, how will you solve this and unbrick my m281fdw? Please inform me of the steps your are taking and provide a solution ASAP.

@Incith: Thanks for making this webpage with clear instructions and pictures! Hope it helps for (some of) the people to get their printer back to work.

Hello,

with a paperclip, shorting the pads since there are no jumpers, I managed to reset the firmware.

A big thank you to those who contributed into building up the knowledge necessary to get the printer back to life.

now, did you guys found a way to disable the auto update?

if yes can you share screenshots?

thank you

@Dadeit82: Here's the menu sequence: Setup -> Service -> LaserJet Update -> Manage Updates -> Check automatically -> OFF

and

Setup-> Service -> LaserJet Update -> Manage Updates -> Allow Updates -> NO
